03Schedule by season

Milos (Adamas) to Piraeus ferry schedule by season.

This is a daily, year-round route. In Ferryhopper's operator table, which is based on last year's data, both Minoan Lines and Blue Star Ferries sail every day in every month, so even in winter you normally have two departures a day to choose from. Seajets adds high-speed sailings from March to November, from once a week to daily depending on the month. Fast Ferries usually adds one sailing a week, and Aegean Sea Lines runs two to five days a week in the cooler months. We did not have a sampled timetable for this direction, so use the booking search on this page for exact times on your date.

The Journey

The Milos (Adamas) to Piraeus crossing.

Milos is one of the most rewarding islands in the Cyclades, with the white volcanic rocks of Sarakiniko, colourful fishing villages and a long list of beaches, and for most visitors the trip ends with this ferry back to Athens. Unlike many smaller islands, Milos keeps a daily service to Athens even in winter.

The choice of ship is wider than on most western Cyclades routes. Blue Star Ferries and Minoan Lines both sail daily throughout the year, Seajets adds faster boats from spring to late autumn, and Fast Ferries and Aegean Sea Lines run slower, cheaper sailings on some days. Many ships stop at Sifnos and Serifos on the way, which is why the journey time varies so much.

You arrive at Piraeus, Athens' main port, about 15 km south of the city centre and 45 km from the airport. If you are heading straight to a flight, choose an early or high-speed sailing and leave a generous margin; if your onward plans are flexible, the slower ships are cheaper and give you time to relax on deck.

This is one of the routes where summer seats really do run out. Ferryhopper advises booking two to three months ahead for high season, and booking your return at the same time as your outward trip. Milos also has an airport (MLO) if a sailing is not possible.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper lists a shortest trip of 2 hours 35 minutes from Adamas to Piraeus and gives a general range of around 3 to 7.5 hours for the route. The Seajets high-speed boats take 2 hours 35 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes, depending on stops. Minoan Lines is the quickest conventional option at 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes, followed by Blue Star Ferries at 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes. Fast Ferries takes 4 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours 45 minutes, and Aegean Sea Lines 5 hours 10 minutes to 7 hours 25 minutes. The sea distance is about 84 nautical miles, roughly 155 km.

Athens ferries leave from Adamas (also written Adamantas), the port on the north side of Milos, set in the island's huge sheltered bay. The port area has a tourist information office, toilets, parking and free Wi-Fi, and Adamas village, with its cafés, restaurants, hotels and shops, is a two-minute walk from the quay. If you are staying in Plaka, Pollonia or elsewhere, arrange a taxi or drive down with time to spare, as the port and the roads into Adamas get busy around summer departures. Ferryhopper recommends being at the port at least an hour before departure, which also applies if you are bringing a car.

Ferries from Milos normally dock at gate E6, E7 or E9 in Piraeus, though the gate can change, so check your ticket or ask the crew. Piraeus is about 15 km from central Athens and 45 km from Athens International Airport. Metro Line 1 links the port with the city centre, and the tram also reaches the port area; for the airport, you can use the metro, a bus, the suburban railway or a taxi. If you arrive late in the evening, a taxi or a hotel near the port may be simplest.

The conventional ships on this route, such as those of Minoan Lines, Blue Star Ferries, Fast Ferries and Aegean Sea Lines, have air-conditioned lounges, open decks, snack bars and shops, and some have play areas for children. Cabins for one to four people, inside or with a window and with a private bathroom, start from around €80 on the conventional ships, and some are pet-friendly. On Seajets there are no cabins, but you can book numbered airline-style seats. Economy seats start from around €40, deck-lounge seats from around €30, and business or VIP seats from about €60 to €100. Wi-Fi is usually sold on board. Keep luggage under about 50 kg.

Milos sits far out in the south-west of the Cyclades, and the route north to Piraeus runs straight into the summer meltemi, the north wind that peaks in July and August. The Seajets high-speed boats are most likely to slow down, run late or be kept in port; the large conventional ships usually sail but may take longer than scheduled. The port authority can hold any departure in unsafe conditions. If your sailing is cancelled, your operator will offer another departure or a refund, and with two conventional companies sailing daily, there is often another ship soon. Allow a good buffer before any flight.

  1. Book two to three months ahead for July and August, and book your return at the same time.

  2. Minoan Lines had the lowest fare in this direction, from €33, and sails daily.

  3. Choose Seajets, from 2 hr 35 min, if you are connecting to a flight the same day.

  5. Arrive at Adamas at least an hour before departure, especially with a car.

  • It is possible with a high-speed or morning conventional sailing and a late flight, but leave several hours. The airport is about 45 km from Piraeus, and summer winds can delay ships. If your flight is in the morning, travel to Athens the day before, or consider flying from Milos (MLO) instead.

  • Meltemi winds in July and August can stop the Seajets boats, and the port authority may hold any ship in rough seas. The operator will rebook or refund your ticket. With Minoan Lines and Blue Star Ferries both sailing daily, you can often move to another ship the same day or the next.
