The Journey

The Amorgos (Katapola) to Piraeus crossing.

Amorgos is the long, mountainous island at the eastern edge of the Cyclades, loved for its cliff-hung monastery of Hozoviotissa, its walking trails and its deep blue water. It is also one of the more remote islands from Athens, and the ferry home is a long day or night at sea.

The first thing to check is your port. Amorgos has two: Katapola, the main harbour on the west side, and Aegiali in the north. Most Piraeus sailings, and all the Seajets high-speed boats, leave from Katapola; some Blue Star Ferries sailings also call at Aegiali. Make sure the port on your ticket matches where you are staying, as the drive between the two takes time.

Only two companies serve this direction. Blue Star Ferries sails all year, three or four days a week, on conventional ships that stop at several islands on the way and can take well over eight hours. Seajets adds faster boats from spring to autumn, though its times also vary a lot with the route of the day.

Because departures are not daily and crossings are long, plan your last night on Amorgos around the ferry, and leave at least a day before any flight home from Athens. In July and August, book early, especially if you are bringing a car.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper gives a normal range of 4 hours 35 minutes to 9 hours 30 minutes for Amorgos and Piraeus, and the time depends heavily on your port and ship. From Katapola, the shortest listed trip is 4 hours 40 minutes on a Seajets boat, but in some months its sailings take 7 hours 30 minutes or more; Blue Star Ferries takes between 5 hours 35 minutes and 9 hours 30 minutes. From Aegiali, the shortest trip is 7 hours 25 minutes, with Blue Star sailings running up to 9 hours 10 minutes. The long times reflect stops at other islands, so check the arrival time for your sailing.

04The ports

Where the Amorgos (Katapola) to Piraeus ferry docks.

Departure port

Amorgos

AMO · 36.8333° N 25.8500° E

Most Athens-bound boats leave from Katapola, the main port on the west side of Amorgos, a pretty harbour village with tavernas and a small beach. Chora, the capital, is inland up the hill, and our route data mentions a bus between the port and Chora, though its times vary by season. If you are staying in the north, around Aegiali, check whether your sailing calls there, since some Blue Star Ferries departures do and it will save you the long drive south. Either way, arrange your transport to the port in advance for early or late departures, and be at the quay in good time.

Arrival port

Athens (Piraeus)

PIR · 37.9475° N 23.6412° E

Ships from Amorgos arrive at Piraeus, the main port of Athens. The gate depends on the ship, so check your ticket and the signs as you disembark. Metro Line 1 runs from Piraeus into central Athens, and the tram also serves the port area; taxis are available at the terminals. After a long crossing, especially one that lands late at night or early in the morning, many travellers prefer a taxi or a hotel near the port. For Athens airport, the transfer is long, so do not plan a tight connection.

05On Board

On board the Amorgos (Katapola) to Piraeus ferry.

On a trip of five to nine hours, you will want to make yourself comfortable. The Blue Star Ferries ships are large conventional vessels with indoor lounges, open decks, cafés and snack bars, and they offer numbered seats and cabins, which are well worth booking on the longest and overnight sailings. The Seajets high-speed boats keep passengers indoors in airline-style seats, with a snack bar but no cabins. Pack water and snacks, bring a warm layer against the air-conditioning, and keep valuables with you. Check each company's rules if you are travelling with a pet.

06Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Amorgos (Katapola) to Piraeus route.

Amorgos sits on the exposed eastern side of the Cyclades, and the route to Piraeus crosses open water swept by the meltemi, the north wind that peaks in July and August. The Seajets boats are the most affected and can be delayed or kept in port, while the Blue Star ships usually sail, if sometimes late. In winter, storms can also stop sailings, and the port authority can hold any departure when conditions are unsafe. With sailings only three to seven days a week, a cancellation may cost you a day or more. Your operator will rebook or refund you; you can also look at routing via Naxos, which has daily Piraeus boats.
