The Journey

The Syros (Ermoupoli) to Piraeus crossing.

Syros is the capital of the Cyclades and a real working island, with the neoclassical mansions and marble squares of Ermoupoli, the medieval hill town of Ano Syros and a year-round population. That makes the ferry to Athens a lifeline rather than a summer extra, and it is one of the most reliable routes in the Cyclades.

Two companies serve this direction. Blue Star Ferries sails every day, all year, on large conventional ships; in several months of Ferryhopper's table of last year's data, Seajets also runs high-speed boats that cut the trip to around two hours. The fares are close enough that many travellers choose purely on timing.

Arrival is at Piraeus, Athens' main port, roughly 10 km south-west of the city centre, with the metro station directly across from the main Cyclades gates. From there, metro Line 3 continues all the way to the airport, and the X96 bus links the port and the airport around the clock, so connections are easier than from many islands.

Book ahead in summer and around Greek holidays, especially for cabins and car spaces, which are limited. And remember that Syros has its own airport (JSY) if you ever need an alternative to the boat.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper lists a shortest trip of 1 hour 55 minutes from Syros to Piraeus and a usual range of 2 to 4 hours. Seajets high-speed boats take 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes; Ferryhopper names the Champions League Jet 2 as the fastest vessel, at about 2 hours. Blue Star Ferries takes 2 hours 55 minutes to 3 hours 35 minutes depending on the month and the ship. The distance between the two ports is about 70 nautical miles, roughly 130 km, so even the conventional ships get you to Athens by the afternoon on a morning sailing.

In Piraeus, Syros ships normally use one of the central gates (E4, E6, E7, E8, E9 or E10), opposite the metro station and the main footbridge. There are ATMs, luggage lockers, travel agencies and fast-food outlets nearby. From the station across from gate E6, metro Line 1 and Line 3 run into Athens; Line 3 reaches Syntagma in about 20 minutes and the airport in about an hour. 05On Board

Blue Star's conventional ships have air-conditioned lounges, outdoor decks, snack bars, restaurants and shops, and sell cabins for up to four people, inside or with a sea view, from around €70, including a small number of wheelchair-accessible ones. For a seat upgrade, numbered seats started at €50 and business or VIP lounges at around €67 on both conventional and high-speed boats. The Seajets boats have air-conditioned lounges and a snack bar, and on a two-hour trip you will not miss the extras. Both companies allow up to 50 kg of luggage free. Pets travel free if booked; on the conventional ships they can use kennels or pet-friendly cabins.

06Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Syros (Ermoupoli) to Piraeus route.

Syros sits in the middle of the Cyclades, open to the summer meltemi, the north wind that peaks in July and August. On windy days the Seajets high-speed boats are the most likely to be slowed or held in port, while the Blue Star ships usually keep sailing, though they can run late. The port authority can stop any departure in unsafe conditions. Because Blue Star sails daily, a cancellation usually means moving to the next day's ship rather than a long wait; your operator will rebook or refund you. Leave a buffer before any flight from Athens.
