03Schedule by season

Milos (Adamas) to Sikinos ferry schedule by season.

Ferryhopper lists the route from January to December, on 2 to 3 days a week. Its monthly table, which is based on last year's data, shows the pattern clearly: Blue Star Ferries about once a week in every month that had data, Fast Ferries once a week in most months and twice a week in a couple of them, and Seajets appearing once a week in a single summer month. One winter month showed no data at all. In practice that means two sailings a week is a good week, and the timetable is similar in winter and summer, so pick your Milos departure day first and build the rest of the trip around it. We did not have a sampled timetable for this direction, so check departure times on the booking page.

The Journey

The Milos (Adamas) to Sikinos crossing.

Sikinos is the island most people sail past. It sits between Folegandros and Ios, has a single small port, a hilltop Chora and Kastro, and very little in the way of organised tourism. That is exactly why travellers come: for empty paths, a slow village rhythm and evenings without crowds. Milos, by contrast, is one of the busiest islands in the western Cyclades, with its lunar coastline, boat trips around Kleftiko and a lively port at Adamas.

The direct link between them is not a busy commuter line. It is a stop on the long conventional runs that thread through the southern Cyclades, so there are only a couple of sailings a week and the crossing takes close to three hours on most of them. The upside is price: a deck seat started at €11.50 per adult when we checked, which is cheap for a trip of this length.

Before you book, find out which days the ships call. In last year's data, Fast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries each sailed about once a week, with Fast Ferries doubling up in a couple of months. If neither runs on the day you want, look at the routes via Folegandros or Ios, which are both a short hop from Sikinos.

Sikinos has no airport, so if you are ending a trip there, plan your way back through a bigger island. Milos has its own airport (MLO), which makes it a practical start point if you flew in from Athens.

How long the crossing takes

The shortest trip Ferryhopper lists from Adamas to Sikinos is 1 hr 25 min, and it summarises the route as normally taking 1 hr 25 min to 2 hr 50 min. That quick time belongs to Seajets, which ran on this direction only once a week in one month last year. The boats you are far more likely to catch are slower. In the monthly figures for this direction, based on last year's data, Fast Ferries took about 2 hr 40 min to 2 hr 50 min, and Blue Star Ferries 3 hr 10 min to 3 hr 40 min, which is longer than the headline range because its ship calls at other islands on the way. Plan for roughly three hours.

All sailings leave from Adamas (Ferryhopper calls it Adamantas), the port town of Milos, set inside the island's large, sheltered bay on the north coast. If you are staying in Adamas you can simply walk to the quay; from Plaka, Pollonia or a beach rental elsewhere on the island, come by car, taxi or with your host, and keep in mind that the port road gets busy when several ships are due. The waterfront has cafés, shops and car rental offices, handy for returning a hire car before you board. Because your ship is on a long island-hopping run, it can arrive a little late, so keep an eye on the vessel name and listen for announcements.

You arrive at Alopronia, the only port on Sikinos: a small, quiet harbour with a beach beside it and a handful of places to eat and stay. The island's main settlements, Chora and Kastro, sit higher up, so ask your accommodation before you travel how you will get there, especially if your ship lands in the evening. There is no big taxi rank here, and hire cars or scooters are best arranged ahead. If you plan to walk and explore, Sikinos rewards it, but not with luggage up the hill.

05On Board

On this route you are almost always on a conventional ferry, and with close to three hours at sea that is no bad thing. You can move between indoor lounges and the open decks, buy coffee and a snack on board, and watch the south-western Cyclades go by. The ships are built for cars and freight as well as foot passengers, so there is room to stretch out. Keep your bags with you or in the luggage area near the entrance; there is no check-in. If the rare Seajets sailing suits your date, expect an enclosed catamaran with assigned seats and little outdoor space.

The open water between Milos and Sikinos catches the full force of the meltemi, the north wind that blows hardest in July and August. The regular ships on this route are large conventional ferries, which usually keep sailing, though a long itinerary can run late on windy days. The occasional Seajets boat is the most exposed. The port authority can hold any departure if conditions are unsafe. With only a couple of direct sailings a week, a cancellation can leave you waiting days for the next one, so if your ship is cancelled, ask the operator to rebook or refund you and check the route via Folegandros, which may have a boat sooner.

  1. Choose your travel day by the ferry, not the other way round: in last year's data only Fast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries sailed regularly, each about once a week.

  2. A deck seat is cheap on this route, from €11.50 per adult when we checked, so there is little reason to pay extra unless you want a reserved seat.

  3. Arrange transport from Alopronia up to Chora with your host before you sail, as options at the port are limited.

  4. Bring food and water for a crossing of around three hours; on-board choice is basic.

  5. If no direct boat suits, check the connections via Folegandros or Ios, which both have short hops to Sikinos.

  • Usually around three hours. In last year's monthly data for this direction, Fast Ferries took about 2 hr 40 min to 2 hr 50 min and Blue Star Ferries 3 hr 10 min to 3 hr 40 min. Ferryhopper's shortest listed trip is 1 hr 25 min, but that was a Seajets boat that sailed only once a week in a single summer month.

  • When we checked Ferryhopper on 24 September 2026, one adult started at €11.50, two adults at €23 and two adults with a car at €39. In last year's monthly data Blue Star Ferries dipped to €9 in one month. The Seajets high-speed sailing, when it runs, costs much more, from €74.70.

  • Two or three sailing days a week, according to Ferryhopper, all year round. In last year's data that came from Blue Star Ferries about once a week and Fast Ferries once or twice a week. The pattern is much the same in summer and winter, and one winter month showed no data, so check your exact date.

  • Fast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries run the regular conventional sailings. Seajets also appeared in Ferryhopper's data with a high-speed boat, but only once a week in one summer month last year. No company runs this route daily, so the day you sail matters more than the company you choose.

  • On paper, Seajets, at about 1 hr 25 min, from €74.70. In practice it was listed only once a week in a single month last year, so most travellers will take Fast Ferries, about 2 hr 40 min to 2 hr 50 min, which is the quicker of the two regular operators.

  • Yes, on the conventional ferries. Ferryhopper showed two adults with a car from €39 when we checked. Sikinos is small, with few roads, so many visitors leave the car behind and hire something locally or rely on their host for transfers. If you do bring a vehicle, book it with your ticket.

  • As soon as your dates are fixed. With only two or three sailings a week, the day matters more than the fare, and a missed boat can mean waiting several days. If you are bringing a vehicle, book it at the same time, since car deck space on a single weekly ship is finite.

  • No. The crossing takes around three hours on the regular ferries, and with only a couple of sailings a week there is no way to go and come back on the same day. Sikinos is a place to stay for a few nights; plan your onward or return leg before you go.

  • At Alopronia, the island's only port, a small harbour with a beach and a few places to stay and eat. Chora and Kastro, the main villages, are up the hill, so arrange transport with your accommodation before you arrive, particularly for an evening landing.

  • Strong meltemi winds in July and August can delay or stop sailings, though the big conventional ships on this route are less affected than high-speed boats. If the port authority holds your ship, the operator will offer another departure or a refund. Because the next direct ferry may be days away, check the route via Folegandros too.
