Donousa is the far eastern outpost of the Small Cyclades, a hilly little island beyond Naxos where the day revolves around the harbour village, a few beaches and the arrival of the ship. The Blue Star ferry to Piraeus is how most visitors leave, and for many it is a slow, pleasant way to wind down before the city.
It is a long trip. The ship works its way west through the islands, collecting passengers as it goes, so the crossing takes 6 hr 30 min to 8 hr 10 min depending on the day's calls. Ferryhopper's monthly figures for this direction put most sailings at around 7 hr 15 min, with the longest trips in July and August. There is no faster boat on the direct line.
Sailings are not daily. Ferryhopper's month-by-month table shows 3 or 4 departures a week from Donousa in every month, and its route summary allows for more in the busiest weeks. That regularity is good news for a small island, but it still means you choose your leaving day from the timetable. If you are flying home, sail at least a day before your flight.
Fares are moderate for the distance: from €42 for one adult when we checked, or €188.50 for two adults with a car. If the direct days do not suit, the Donousa ferries to Naxos, Koufonisia, Amorgos and Paros let you reach a bigger island first, with many more sailings to Piraeus and an airport.
