The Journey

The Tinos to Piraeus crossing.

Tinos is the island of marble villages, dovecotes and the great pilgrimage church of Panagia Evangelistria, and it is a favourite with Greek visitors as well as travellers looking for a quieter neighbour to Mykonos. Its closeness to Athens makes the ferry home a comfortable half-day trip.

Two companies sail this direction to Piraeus. Blue Star Ferries runs every day of the year on large conventional ships, and Seajets adds high-speed boats on some days from late spring to September. Tinos also has frequent boats to Rafina, the smaller Athens port east of the city, which many travellers use when heading to the airport; this page covers the Piraeus route.

Piraeus is Athens' main port, with direct metro links into the city and on to the airport. It suits travellers staying in central Athens or catching a ferry, train or bus onward. If your only goal is the airport, compare this route with Tinos to Rafina before you book.

Plan ahead for the big religious holidays, especially around 15 August, when Tinos fills with pilgrims and boats both to and from the island are in heavy demand. In July and August, book early too, particularly for cars and cabins.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper gives a shortest trip of 2 hours 20 minutes from Tinos to Piraeus and a usual range of 2 hours 20 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes for the route. The Seajets high-speed boats take 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 45 minutes. Blue Star Ferries takes between 3 hours 40 minutes and 5 hours 30 minutes, depending on the month and the islands it calls at on the way; our own older data gave a maximum of 4 hours 21 minutes, which the newer figures replace. The two ports are about 77 nautical miles apart, roughly 145 km.

04The ports

Where the Tinos to Piraeus ferry docks.

Departure port

Tinos

TIN · 37.5361° N 25.1633° E

Ferries leave from the port of Tinos in Chora, the island capital, on the south coast. The harbour is part of the town, so ticket offices, cafés, restaurants, pharmacies and shops are all close by. From central hotels or the Church of Panagia Evangelistria it is roughly a 10 to 15-minute walk. If you are driving, there is some parking along the waterfront. The island's main bus station is in the port area, with buses to villages such as Pyrgos, Kalloni and Porto, and a taxi from nearby places like Agios Sostis or Kionia takes 10 to 15 minutes. Check which quay your ship uses and arrive in good time.

Arrival port

Athens (Piraeus)

PIR · 37.9475° N 23.6412° E

At Piraeus, Cyclades ships most often use gates E6 and E7, although the berth can change with port traffic, so check your ticket and the display boards. A free shuttle bus runs inside the port, stopping at every gate. Central Athens is about 25 minutes away on the metro (Line 1 or Line 3), or 25 to 40 minutes by taxi. For Athens airport, allow about an hour by public transport or around 45 minutes by car or taxi, and add time for traffic.

05On Board

On board the Tinos to Piraeus ferry.

The Blue Star ships have air-conditioned lounges, snack bars and restaurants, Wi-Fi on most sailings, and facilities for passengers with disabilities and pets. On the conventional ships you can book a cabin for one to four people, inside, with a window or shared, or an airline-style numbered seat or a business-lounge seat. The Seajets high-speed boats have no cabins, but offer numbered seats plus business and VIP lounges. There is no luggage check-in; keep bags with you or in the luggage area, and stay under about 50 kg. Pets travel free, under each company's own rules.

06Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Tinos to Piraeus route.

The route from Tinos to Piraeus runs straight into the summer meltemi, the north wind that peaks in July and August. The Seajets high-speed boats are the most likely to be delayed or kept in port on those days, while the Blue Star ships usually sail, though they may be late. The port authority can hold any departure in unsafe conditions. With Blue Star sailing daily, a cancellation usually means taking the next ship; your operator will rebook or refund you. Leave a buffer before any flight from Athens, and consider Rafina as a fallback.
