Folegandros is the island people go to when Santorini feels too busy. It lies to the north-west of Santorini, close enough for a short hop, yet it feels a world away, with a clifftop Chora, a small port and a slower pace than the caldera. Many travellers end a Santorini stay with a few quiet days here, or come the other way to finish with the caldera views.
The crossing starts at Athinios, Santorini's main ferry port, set at the foot of the caldera cliffs on the west coast. It ends at Karavostasis, the small harbour of Folegandros on the island's south coast, about five minutes by car below Chora. The contrast between the two ports tells you a lot: Athinios gets very busy in high season, while Karavostasis is a small village port.
This route slots naturally into a western Cyclades itinerary. From Folegandros you can continue to Milos, Sikinos or Ios, and some ships carry on to Piraeus, so you do not need to go back through Santorini to get home. With only about 28 nautical miles between the two ports, it is one of the easier hops out of Santorini.
When you book, weigh speed against price and timing. The Seajets boat is fast but costs around ten times the cheapest slow-ship fare (from €69.70 against €6.99 when we checked). Look at the arrival time too: on our 12 August 2026 sample the Fast Ferries sailing left at 19:30 and reached Folegandros at 22:20, so plan how you will get from the port to your room.
