03Schedule by season

Lavrio to Folegandros ferry schedule by season.

Ferryhopper lists this route from January to December with one sailing a week, always on Blue Star Ferries. Its monthly table, which is based on last year's data, shows that weekly ship in every month, so this is a year-round link rather than a summer extra, but there is never more than one departure a week. That makes the day of the week the key planning decision: build the rest of your trip around it. We did not have a sampled timetable for this route, so the departure day and time for your week are shown on the booking page when you search.

The Journey

The Lavrio to Folegandros crossing.

Folegandros is the island people describe when they want the Cyclades without the crowds: a clifftop Chora of little squares and whitewashed lanes, walking paths across a bare, dramatic landscape and beaches you often reach by boat or on foot. It has no airport, so everyone arrives by sea, and most come from Piraeus or from neighbouring islands.

The Lavrio sailing is a niche option, but a useful one if you are based on the south-east side of Attica or coming straight from Athens airport. Instead of crossing the city to Piraeus, you board at a small port on the Sounion coast and let the ship do the rest.

Be clear about what you are signing up for. There is one Blue Star Ferries sailing a week, and it is not a quick crossing. In a couple of months of last year's data the ship reached Folegandros in 7 hr 25 min; in most months it took 13 hr 50 min, because it works its way through a longer chain of islands first. That makes it a slow, cheap, scenic way to travel, and a poor choice if you are short of time.

If the day and duration suit you, the fare is low, from €28 for one adult on the date we checked, and you can bring a car. Check the duration for your exact sailing before booking, bring supplies for a long day, and arrange how you will get from the port up to Chora.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper puts the Lavrio to Folegandros trip at 7 hr 25 min to 13 hr 50 min. The spread comes from the itinerary, not the weather: the one ship on the route follows a longer or shorter loop through the islands depending on the season. In Ferryhopper's monthly table, based on last year's data, most months show 13 hr 50 min, one shows 13 hours, and two show the quicker 7 hr 25 min. So the realistic expectation for most of the year is a full day at sea, and a 7 hr 25 min sailing is the exception rather than the rule. Whatever you book, the duration printed on the ticket is the one that counts, and bad weather can stretch it.

04The ports

Where the Lavrio to Folegandros ferry docks.

Departure port

Athens (Lavrio)

LAV · 37.7131° N 24.0556° E

Lavrio is a former mining town on the south-east coast of Attica, about 60 km from central Athens and around 35 km from Athens International Airport. It is a much smaller port than Piraeus and mostly serves Kea, Kythnos and the western islands, which is why this weekly Folegandros sailing leaves from here. Its big advantage is the airport: you can land and reach the ship without going into the city. KTEL Attica buses run daily to Lavrio from Pedion Areos in central Athens, taking about 2 hours in traffic, so a taxi or transfer is quicker. Arrive early, and earlier still with a car.

Arrival port

Folegandros

FOL · 36.6167° N 24.9333° E

Ferries dock at Karavostasis, the only port on Folegandros, a small harbour below the island's high cliffs. Most visitors stay in Chora, which sits on a clifftop about 200 metres above the sea, and the island bus climbs up to it from the port. On a sailing this long, your arrival time can be early or late in the day, so sort out the ride to your room before you leave Lavrio: ask your accommodation about a pick-up or book a rental for collection at the port. Folegandros is a place for walking and small vehicles, and many visitors leave the car behind.

05On Board

On board the Lavrio to Folegandros ferry.

This is a big conventional Blue Star Ferries ship, which is what you want for a crossing that can last most of a day. You can move between indoor lounges, open decks and the on-board café, and there is space to stretch out rather than being stuck in an airline-style seat. Ferryhopper did not publish on-board details for this particular route, so check when you book whether numbered seats or cabins are offered on your sailing. Either way, pack water, snacks, a warm layer for the air-conditioned lounges and something to pass the time. There is no luggage check-in on Greek ferries; keep your bags with you or in the luggage area.

06Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Lavrio to Folegandros route.

A crossing this long passes through a lot of open Aegean water, and in July and August the meltemi, the strong north wind of the Greek summer, can make parts of it rough. The Blue Star ship is a large conventional vessel that keeps sailing in conditions that stop smaller fast boats, but it can run late, and the port authority can hold departures in a real gale. If your sailing is cancelled, the operator will rebook or refund you. Since the next Lavrio sailing is a week away, the realistic plan B is to take a ferry from Piraeus to Folegandros instead.

07Travel Tips

Lavrio to Folegandros ferry travel tips.

  1. Check the duration of your specific sailing: the same route can take 7 hr 25 min or 13 hr 50 min.

  2. With only one ship a week, confirm the ferry before you book rooms on Folegandros.

  3. Coming from Athens airport? Lavrio is about 35 km away, so you avoid the drive through Athens to Piraeus.

  4. Arrange your transfer from Karavostasis to Chora in advance, especially if you land late.

  5. If the weekly ship does not fit, Piraeus has far more sailings to Folegandros, and faster ones.

08Alternatives

Other ways between Lavrio and Folegandros.

Questions

Lavrio to Folegandros ferry: frequently asked questions.

  • Between 7 hr 25 min and 13 hr 50 min. In Ferryhopper's data from last year, most weekly sailings took 13 hr 50 min, one took 13 hours, and two months showed a quicker 7 hr 25 min. The difference comes from the route the Blue Star ship follows through the islands, so check the duration for your date.
  • When we checked Ferryhopper on 24 September 2026, one adult started at €28 and two adults with a car at €105.50. Last year's monthly data also showed a €22.50 adult fare in one month. Fares depend on the date and the seat type, so the booking page gives the exact price.
  • Once a week, all year. Ferryhopper lists the route from January to December, and last year's data showed the weekly Blue Star Ferries sailing in every month. There is no second operator and no daily service, so choose your travel week around the ship.
  • Yes. Blue Star Ferries carries vehicles on this route, and two adults with a car started at €105.50 when we checked. Think twice before bringing one, though: Folegandros is small, walking-friendly and not built for cars, and many visitors manage with the bus, a scooter or a short rental.
  • Late spring and early autumn are ideal: warm sea, open tavernas and far fewer people than in July and August. Summer is lively but busy for such a small island. For this route, the season also matters because the weekly ship takes different times through the year, from 7 hr 25 min to 13 hr 50 min.
  • Blue Star Ferries is the only company on this route, so the real choice is between this weekly Lavrio ship and the more frequent sailings from Piraeus. Lavrio suits you if you are near the airport and the day fits; Piraeus is better if you want a shorter trip or more flexibility.
  • Search Lavrio to Folegandros on this page to see the weekly sailing for your dates, with its duration and fare. Booking and payment happen on Ferryhopper, and tickets arrive by email, so you can board with an e-ticket on your phone.
  • The longest sailings take 13 hr 50 min, so depending on the departure time part of the trip can fall in the evening or night. Ferryhopper did not publish cabin information for this route, so check the booking page for the accommodation options on your sailing before counting on a bed.
  • No. The only ship is a conventional Blue Star Ferries vessel, and even its quickest run in last year's data took 7 hr 25 min. For a faster trip, sail from Piraeus to Folegandros, which takes from about 3 hr 40 min on the quickest boats.
  • At Karavostasis, the island's only port. Chora, where most people stay, is up on the cliffs, and the island bus links it with the harbour. Because arrival times on this long sailing vary, arrange a pick-up or rental before you leave Lavrio.
  • The large Blue Star ship rarely stops for the summer meltemi, but the port authority can hold it in a gale. The operator will then rebook or refund you. As the next sailing from Lavrio is a week later, switch to a Piraeus to Folegandros ferry to keep your plans on track.
  • Ferryhopper showed no fares and no monthly data for the Folegandros to Lavrio direction when we checked, so do not count on a direct return. The reliable way back is Folegandros to Piraeus. See our Folegandros to Lavrio page for more.
