Folegandros and Santorini are only about 28 nautical miles apart, but they could hardly feel more different. Folegandros is small, steep and quiet, with a striking Chora strung along the top of a cliff. Santorini is the famous caldera, the big hotels and the crowds. People usually take this crossing either to add a few calm days before or after Santorini, or to reach Santorini's airport at the end of a trip.
The route has an unusually wide spread of options. Seajets runs fast boats in the warmer months; Fast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries run conventional car ferries that cost a tenth as much; the local Maistros Santorini boat adds a few sailings a week; and in some months Hoper even flies a helicopter across in about a quarter of an hour.
Price is the big decision. The conventional sailings start at €7, while Seajets was €69.70 to €79.70 in last year's data. On our 12 August 2026 sample, the Seajets boat took 1 hr 20 min for €79.70 and the Fast Ferries ship 2 hr 55 min for €7. Whether an extra hour and a half at sea is worth over €70 is up to you.
Plan the Santorini end carefully. All boats arrive at Athinios, the island's main port, which becomes very congested in summer. If you are flying out the same day, allow a generous margin between your arrival and your flight.
