Folegandros and Sikinos sit side by side in the south-western Cyclades, and the channel between them is one of the shortest open-sea hops in the group. Both islands are small and steep, with their main villages set high above the water rather than on the harbour, and both are far calmer than nearby Santorini and Ios. Travellers usually take this boat to add a few quiet days on Sikinos after the busier cliff-top scene of Folegandros Chora.
The trip itself is over before you have finished a coffee. On the conventional ships it takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes, and the cheapest adult ticket Ferryhopper showed when we checked was €4. Price is rarely the deciding factor here. The timetable is: three regular companies share the route, none of them sails every day, and on many days there is just one departure.
Fast Ferries does most of the work, with 3 to 5 sailings a week in last year's figures. The local Maistros Santorini boat adds 1 to 3 a week and Blue Star Ferries about one. Seajets showed up once a week in only two months of that data, at a fare far above the rest. Together these companies give Folegandros a link to Sikinos on most days of the week, all year round.
So the order of planning is simple: fix the day first, then the island stay around it. Check which company sails on your date and at what time it leaves Karavostasis, and arrange your ride from Alopronia, the port of Sikinos, up to the village before you arrive, especially if you land in the late afternoon.
