The Journey

The Lavrio to Kea (Korissia) crossing.

Kea, also called Tzia, is the closest Cycladic island to Athens and the one Athenians escape to at weekends. It is greener than most of the Cyclades, with oak woods, old stone terraces, walking paths and a hilltop capital, Ioulida, and it has kept a low-key feel, helped by the fact that it has no airport.

Nearly everyone reaches Kea from Lavrio, a small port town in the south-east of Attica. Ferryhopper notes that there is normally no direct ferry from Piraeus to Kea, so if you are coming from Athens, Lavrio is the port to aim for. It is a short, simple crossing of around 13 nautical miles on conventional car ferries, run by several small companies as well as Blue Star Ferries.

With boats every day and crossings of about an hour, Kea works as a weekend break, a first stop on a western Cyclades trip, or even a long day out from Athens. The trickier part is usually getting to Lavrio itself, which is about 60 km from central Athens and 35 km from the airport, so plan that leg as carefully as the ferry.

Before booking, note that fares are close between companies, so the real choice is the departure time. Because Kea is a favourite weekend escape from Athens, weekend sailings in summer are the first to fill, and car space goes before passenger seats. If you are bringing a vehicle, book as early as you can.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper puts the normal crossing at 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. Karystia Travel and Triton Ferries both take about an hour, and Goutos Lines about 1 hour 10 minutes. Blue Star Ferries is listed at 1 hour in most months and 40 minutes in a couple of them, which matches Ferryhopper's shortest trip of 40 minutes. On our 12 August 2026 sample, three sailings took exactly 1 hour and the Goutos Lines boat took 1 hour 10 minutes. There are no high-speed boats on this route; it is a conventional ferry crossing of about 13 nautical miles.

05The ports

Where the Lavrio to Kea (Korissia) ferry docks.

Departure port

Athens (Lavrio)

LAV · 37.7131° N 24.0556° E

Lavrio is a small port town on the south-east coast of Attica, about 60 km from central Athens and about 35 km from Athens International Airport. Kea boats normally use the main passenger piers on the eastern side of the harbour, and the town, with cafés, shops and banks, is right next to the port. By car or taxi, allow roughly 35 to 40 minutes from the airport and about an hour or more from central Athens. KTEL Attikis buses run to Lavrio from central Athens, taking 1.5 to 2 hours, and from the airport with a change at Markopoulo, about an hour in total; the town bus terminal is about 20 minutes on foot from the piers. There is paid and free parking near the terminal.

Arrival port

Kea (Tzia)

KEA · 37.6333° N 24.3333° E

On Kea you arrive at Korissia, also called Livadi, the island's main port, set in the sheltered bay of Agios Nikolaos on the north-west coast. It is a small, pleasant village in its own right, with places to stay, cafés, tavernas, bakeries, supermarkets and car hire. Ioulida, the capital, is about 6 km uphill. Taxis wait at a rank by the harbour, and seasonal local buses link Korissia with Ioulida, other villages and some beaches. Kea is spread out and hilly, so a hire car is the easiest way to explore it.

06On Board

On board the Lavrio to Kea (Korissia) ferry.

All the boats on this route are conventional ferries, and for an hour-long trip the facilities are simple: indoor air-conditioned lounges, open decks and a snack bar, with TVs and Wi-Fi on some ships. There are no cabins and no business-class seats; your ticket gives you a standard seat. Luggage is easy: Blue Star Ferries (Hellenic Seaways), Goutos Lines and Karystia Travel allow up to 50 kg, and Triton Ferries allows two bags free. There is no check-in, so keep bags with you or in the luggage area. Pets travel free if you add them to the booking; carry their documents.

07Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Lavrio to Kea (Korissia) route.

The Kea channel is short but open to the north, and the summer meltemi, strongest in July and August, can make it rough and uncomfortable. Because this route uses conventional ferries rather than small high-speed boats, sailings usually go ahead, but the port authority can still hold departures when the wind is very strong. With several companies and daily departures, a cancellation normally means waiting for a later boat rather than losing days. Contact your operator to transfer or refund the ticket, and keep an eye on the forecast if you have a flight from Athens the same evening.
