04Schedule by season

Piraeus to Naxos ferry schedule by season.

Piraeus to Naxos runs every day of the year. Ferryhopper lists 2 to 3 Blue Star crossings and 2 to 4 Seajets crossings a day in season, and its monthly overview, which it says is based on last year's data, shows Blue Star sailing daily in almost every month while Seajets ranges from once a week in the shoulder months to daily in summer. Our Ferryhopper timetable sample for 12 August 2026 listed 7 departures: the first at 06:45 and the last at 17:30. In winter the high-speed service thins out or stops, and Blue Star, sailing almost every day, becomes the main option.

The Journey

The Piraeus to Naxos crossing.

The ferry from Athens to Naxos sails daily from Piraeus with up to 7 departures in summer. Crossing time is 3h 15m to 7h; economy tickets start at €42.

Naxos is the biggest and greenest island in the Cyclades, and it feels more like a working island than a resort. Beyond the harbour town you find long sandy beaches such as Plaka and Agios Prokopios, marble-built mountain villages like Halki and Apeiranthos, and farms known across Greece for their cheese and potatoes. Families love it for the shallow water and space; walkers come for Mount Zas and the old mule paths.

The crossing from Piraeus is about 98 nautical miles, and the conventional ships usually call at one or more islands before Naxos, so the trip doubles as a tour of the central Cyclades. You arrive right in Chora, under the marble Portara, which makes Naxos one of the easiest islands to land on without a car or a transfer booked. It also works well as a hub: Paros, Mykonos, Ios, Santorini and the Small Cyclades are all within a short hop.

Before booking, weigh speed against cost. Seajets can save a couple of hours but costs more; Blue Star Ferries is cheaper, has cabins, decks and restaurants, and runs year-round. Summer weekends and the days around mid-August are the busiest, so reserve early if you need a car space or a particular departure.

How long the crossing takes

Expect about 3 hours 15 minutes to 7 hours. Seajets high-speed boats are quickest at 3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 25 minutes; on 12 August 2026 the Champions League Jet 1 left Piraeus at 08:30 and arrived at 11:45. Blue Star Ferries usually takes around 5 to 6 hours, and our sample day showed 5 hours 5 minutes to 5 hours 45 minutes, though some itineraries run up to 7 hours. The route is roughly 98 nautical miles, about 181 km, and the slower times reflect extra island calls on the way.

05The ports

Where the Piraeus to Naxos ferry docks.

Departure port

Athens (Piraeus)

PIR · 37.9485° N 23.6378° E

The Naxos boats leave from Piraeus, the port of Athens, 45 km from the airport. Pick your route in by where you start. From central Athens, metro Line 1 ends at Piraeus station, opposite the harbour. From the airport, take metro Line 3, or the X96 express bus, which keeps running through the night. From anywhere, a taxi takes about 15 to 35 minutes from the centre or 45 minutes to an hour from the airport, depending on traffic. Naxos ships berth at one of gates E4, E6, E7, E9 or E10, and the gate for your ship can be switched, so read your e-ticket and the port screens before you start walking. Be there an hour ahead, or 1.5 to 2 hours with a vehicle.

Arrival port

Naxos (Chora Port)

JNX · 37.1036° N 25.3756° E

The ferry docks on the west coast right beside Chora, which makes Naxos one of the easiest arrivals in the Cyclades: you walk from the ramp into town, the marble Portara on its islet is a short stroll away, and the Kastro quarter rises behind the harbour. For beaches and villages further out, the intercity KTEL buses and taxis leave from the port area; check bus times on the day, as they change with the season. The island is big, so if you plan to explore the interior or the far beaches, hiring a car or scooter in Chora for a few days is worth it.

06On Board

On board the Piraeus to Naxos ferry.

The two companies give you very different trips. Blue Star's big ships, such as the Blue Star Naxos and Blue Star 1, are made for a five-hour day at sea: you can sit down to a proper meal, browse the shop, let children burn off energy in the play room, or carry your coffee out on deck as the islands pass. Cabins for 1 to 4 people start around €84, numbered seats around €57 and business or VIP lounges from about €73. Seajets catamarans like the Eurochampion Jet trade all that for speed: a cool indoor cabin, a café bar and very little outside space. Wi-Fi is sold in data packages on board. Pets travel free if added to the booking, and there is no luggage check-in; keeping below about 50 kg is sensible.

07Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Piraeus to Naxos route.

The Aegean can turn choppy on this route, particularly when the meltemi blows from the north in July and August. High-speed boats are the most affected and may be delayed, rerouted or cancelled, while Blue Star's big ships usually keep to schedule. The port authority can stop departures in severe weather. When a sailing is scrapped, the operator either rebooks you or returns the fare. On a summer day with several ships, a later Blue Star is usually the easy fix; in winter, with fewer boats, be ready to wait until the next day.

Questions

Piraeus to Naxos ferry: frequently asked questions.

  • Between about 3 hours 15 minutes and 7 hours. Seajets high-speed boats take 3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 25 minutes, and Blue Star Ferries usually 5 to 6 hours, occasionally up to 7. On our 12 August 2026 sample the quickest sailing was the Champions League Jet 1 at 3 hours 15 minutes.
  • Ferryhopper showed adult fares from €42 when we checked on 24 September 2026. On our August sample, Blue Star cost €52.50 and Seajets €68.70 to €77.70. Numbered seats start around €57, business or VIP seats around €73 and Blue Star cabins around €84. Two adults with a car came to €167 one way.
  • Yes. Blue Star Ferries carries cars, motorbikes and campers, and most Seajets vessels have car decks too, though space is limited. Ferryhopper lists cars from about €85 and motorcycles from about €33. Book early and arrive 1.5 to 2 hours before departure. Renting a car on arrival in Naxos is also easy.
  • Around 3 hours 15 minutes on the fastest Seajets boats and up to 7 hours on the slowest Blue Star itineraries. Most Blue Star sailings take about 5 hours, including stops at other islands. If you choose the 17:30 Blue Star, which ran on our 12 August 2026 sample, you reach Naxos at 23:15.
  • In summer, several. Ferryhopper lists 2 to 3 Blue Star and 2 to 4 Seajets crossings a day in season, and our 12 August 2026 sample showed 7 departures between 06:45 and 17:30. In winter, expect Blue Star on almost every day, with fewer or no high-speed runs.
  • Two companies serve this route from Piraeus: Blue Star Ferries with large conventional ships such as the Blue Star Naxos, Blue Star Delos and Blue Star 1, and Seajets, whose fast catamarans on this run include the Eurochampion Jet and Champion Jet 2. Blue Star sails almost every day all year; Seajets is strongest from spring to autumn.
  • Seajets runs the fastest boats, taking around 3 hours 15 to 20 minutes. Ferryhopper names the Worldchampion Jet and Tera Jet, and on our 12 August 2026 sample the Champions League Jet 1 made it in 3 hours 15 minutes. Expect to pay noticeably more than for Blue Star.
  • Naxos ferries normally leave from gates E4, E6, E7, E9 or E10, depending on the ship. Gates can change, so check your ticket and the display boards. Metro Line 1 stops opposite the harbour, and taxi ranks are available at the port. Allow at least an hour before departure.
  • For July and August, book as early as you can if you need a cabin, a car space or a specific morning sailing. Foot passengers can often find seats a week or two ahead, but the cheaper Blue Star fares and the fast boats around mid-August go first. In winter, a few days ahead is usually enough.
  • Strong winds, especially the summer meltemi, can delay or cancel sailings, with high-speed boats affected first. Whoever operates your cancelled boat will offer a later departure or your money back. Leave a spare day before any flight home from Athens.
  • It is not practical. Even the fastest boats take over 3 hours each way, and return times from Naxos vary by date, so you would spend most of the day at sea. Plan to stay at least two or three nights to enjoy Chora, the beaches and the mountain villages.
  • Yes, seasonally. Ferryhopper notes that the Rafina to Naxos route operates from April to October. Rafina is east of Athens and closer to the airport, which can suit travellers heading straight from a flight. Piraeus has more sailings and runs all year, and it is easier to reach from central Athens.
