Ferry from Mykonos (New Port) to Naxos.

Mykonos to Naxos is the easy escape from the busiest island in the Cyclades to one of the most rewarding. Many travellers spend a few nights in Mykonos for the beaches and nightlife, then cross to Naxos for long sandy beaches, mountain villages and good local food. In summer, boats leave throughout the day and the fastest need little more than half an hour.

You sail from the new port of Mykonos at Tourlos, about 2.5 km from Mykonos Town, and arrive at the port of Naxos in Chora, the main town. Cafés, restaurants, shops, hotels and a bus stop are all around the harbour, so the town is on your doorstep the moment you step off.

In a wider itinerary, Naxos is a hub. From its port you can continue to Paros, Santorini, Koufonisia and the other Small Cyclades, so Mykonos, Naxos, then Santorini or Paros is an easy loop to plan. The short crossing also makes a day trip from Mykonos possible in summer.

Before you book, remember that this is mostly a fast-boat route and fares are higher than the short distance suggests. Some high-speed sailings stop on the way and take over an hour, so compare arrival times. If you are travelling with a car, choose a Golden Star or Fast Ferries sailing, as not every Seajets boat has a car deck.

Mykonos is exposed to the meltemi, the strong north wind that peaks in July and August, and the channel to Naxos can get lively. Because most sailings are high-speed boats, delays and cancellations are more likely here than on routes served by big conventional ships. The port authority can keep boats in port when wind or sea conditions are unsafe. With several boats a day in summer, a cancelled fast boat can often be swapped for a later one, so ask the operator to rebook you before asking for your money back. On windy days, a slower conventional sailing may still run when the fast boats do not.
