Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades, and it feels like it. Ermoupoli, the port town, is a grand neoclassical harbour city with marble squares, mansions and Greece's first opera house, while the medieval hill village of Ano Syros rises just behind it. Unlike many islands, Syros has a year-round population and stays lively outside summer, which makes it one of the best Cyclades choices for spring, autumn or even winter trips.
From Piraeus it is one of the easier crossings in the group: about 70 nautical miles (around 130 km), with a boat every day of the year. Blue Star Ferries is the backbone, sailing daily in every month of Ferryhopper's data, and Seajets adds faster boats from spring to autumn. On a high-speed boat you can be in Ermoupoli in about two hours, close enough for a long weekend from Athens.
The choice is mostly price against time. On our sample day, 12 August 2026, Blue Star cost from €46.50 and took 3 hr 45 min to 4 hr 5 min, while Seajets cost €59.70 and took 2 hr to 2 hr 15 min. Blue Star also carries cars, has cabins and runs in winter, when it is the only option.
Because Syros sits in the middle of the Cyclades, it is a natural first stop on an island-hopping trip: Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are all short hops away. It also makes a good stopover on the way to those islands, with a night or two in Ermoupoli.
