Leaving Koufonisia is hard for most visitors, but the crossing to Naxos is the easiest way back into the wider Cyclades. Naxos is the hub of the region: from its port you can catch ferries to Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, Ios and Piraeus. For many people this short trip is the first leg of the journey home or on to the next island.
The two places could hardly be more different. Koufonisia is tiny: a single village on Ano Koufonisi, roughly 800 year-round residents, beaches you walk to, and no real need for a car. Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, with a lively capital, a long line of sandy beaches on the west coast and mountain villages such as Halki and Apeiranthos in the interior.
Plenty of travellers use this route to split their time: a few days of barefoot island life on Koufonisia, then a longer stay on Naxos with more beaches, restaurants and day trips. It also works in the middle of a Small Cyclades loop, since the local ship calls at Schinoussa and Iraklia on its way.
Before booking, match the boat to your plans. If you have an onward ferry or a flight from Naxos the same day, the fast Seajets service leaves you the most margin in summer. If you are in no hurry and want to save money, the slower ships cost a fraction of the price and let you see the smaller islands up close.
