Anafi sits at the far south-eastern corner of the Cyclades, just beyond Santorini, and feels a world away from it. The island has a whitewashed Chora up on the hill, sandy beaches near the port and a quiet, walkable interior. There is no airport and no mass tourism, which is exactly why people make the effort to get here.
The direct ferry from Piraeus is a serious journey. Blue Star Ferries runs the line on big conventional ships that call at several islands on the way, so the shortest crossing in this direction is 7 hr 41 min, and Ferryhopper notes that some vessels take around 11 hr 15 min. The sea distance is about 140 nautical miles. Treat the crossing as a travel day in itself and book a cabin or a numbered seat.
Because the boat runs only 2 to 5 days a week, the ferry timetable should shape your Anafi dates. Pick the sailing day first, then book your room. If the direct boat does not suit, many travellers go to Santorini, which has far more connections from Athens, and take the short hop to Anafi from there.
Fares on the direct route started at €45.50 for one adult when we checked on 24 September 2026, and two adults with a car started at €186. Cabins are popular on a trip this long, so reserve early in summer. When you land at Agios Nikolaos, the island's only port, you are about 3 km below Chora and within easy reach of the beach at Klisidi.
