04Schedule by season

Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry schedule by season.

Ferryhopper lists this route from January to December on three to seven days a week. Its monthly operator table is based on last year's data, and in that pattern Blue Star Ferries sailed three or four days a week through the year, while Seajets added high-speed trips in the warmer months, from once a week up to every day at the peak of summer. Summer departures from Piraeus usually leave in the morning; overnight sailings exist too, with the latest departures usually around 23:30. The timetable sample for 12 August 2026 showed a single direct listing that day, the Seajets 08:30 departure. In winter, expect only the conventional ship on a few days a week.

The Journey

The Piraeus to Koufonisia crossing.

The ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Koufonisia is a key Cyclades connection. The crossing takes about 4h on the fastest vessels, with tickets from €42. Sailings run all year, thinning out in winter, operated by Blue Star Ferries and Seajets.

Koufonisia is the favourite of the Small Cyclades, a cluster of little islands between Naxos and Amorgos. It is actually two islands: Ano Koufonisi, the inhabited one where the ferries dock, and Kato Koufonisi, reached by small boat. People come for turquoise coves, a flat coastline you can walk or cycle around, and a slower pace than the big-name islands.

This direct route is the easiest way to get there from Athens without changing boats. The conventional ships take the long way through the central Cyclades, about seven and a half to eight and a half hours, while the high-speed boats cut the trip to around four hours. Many travellers combine Koufonisia with Naxos, Amorgos or the other Small Cyclades, arriving by one route and leaving by another.

There is no airport on Koufonisia, so the boat is the only way in, and a missed sailing can cost you a day. Plan with care. Book early for July and August, when Koufonisia's limited beds and the high-speed seats both sell out. If you take a night ship, reserve a cabin. And if you want to bring a car, think twice: the island is tiny and most visitors walk, cycle or use the local boats.

How long the crossing takes

Ferryhopper gives a normal range of about 4 hr to 9.5 hr for this route, and the difference comes down to the type of ship. Seajets high-speed boats take about 4 hours on their quicker routing; the sailing on the 12 August 2026 sample took exactly 4 hours, while one longer Seajets routing in last year's data took 7 hr 45 min. Blue Star Ferries conventional ships take about 7 hr 30 min to 8 hr 25 min on this long run through the islands. Check the duration shown on the booking page, not just the departure time.

05The ports

Where the Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry docks.

Departure port

Athens (Piraeus)

PIR · 37.9475° N 23.6412° E

Boats leave from Piraeus, Athens' main port, some 45 km from Athens airport. Metro Line 1 runs in from central Athens and Line 3 from the airport, and the X96 bus links the airport and the port around the clock. The port is huge, with numbered gates spread along the waterfront, and Koufonisia sailings usually use gates E4, E6, E7, E9 or E10; the gate can change, so check your ticket and the port screens on the day. A free shuttle bus run by the port authority links the gates. Arrive at least an hour before departure in summer, or about 90 minutes if you are driving on. Snack bars and waiting rooms inside the port help if you are early.

Arrival port

Koufonisia

KOU · 36.9333° N 25.6000° E

Ferries dock at the main port of Ano Koufonisi, the inhabited island, right in Chora, its main village, on the southern shore. Arrival could hardly be simpler: cafés, restaurants, hotels and shops are a few minutes' walk from the quay, and Ammos, one of the island's best beaches, is a short stroll away. Because the island is small, most visitors walk to their room; if yours is further out, ask your host how to get there before you sail, especially if you are arriving on a late boat.

06On Board

On board the Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry.

The two options feel very different. The Seajets high-speed boats have airline-style numbered seats, a business lounge and a snack bar; you stay inside, and the ride can be lively on windy days. Blue Star Ferries ships are large, stable car ferries with restaurants, cafés, outdoor decks, numbered seats, a business lounge and cabins for one to four people, which are worth booking on a night sailing. Wi-Fi is usually available on board. If you need step-free access or boarding help, tell the operator when you book. There is no luggage check-in; keep bags under about 50 kg per person.

07Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Piraeus to Koufonisia route.

The long route across the central Aegean is exposed to the summer meltemi, the steady northerly wind that peaks in July and August. It can make the high-speed boats uncomfortable and sometimes leads to delays or cancellations, while the big conventional ships usually keep running. The port authority can hold departures when it judges conditions unsafe. The operator rebooks or refunds a cancelled ticket through your booking, but there is no quick second boat on this route: with a few sailings a week in winter, a cancellation can shift your plans by days, so keep flexible dates around any flight.

08Travel Tips

Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry travel tips.

  1. Book a cabin on the overnight Blue Star Ferries sailing; seven hours or more in a lounge chair is hard going.

  2. Use the free port shuttle bus in Piraeus if your gate is far from the metro station.

  3. Reserve your Koufonisia room before your ferry in July and August; the island has limited accommodation.

  4. Leave the car in Athens: Koufonisia is small and walkable, and a car costs about €85 or more each way.

  5. Arrive at Piraeus at least an hour before departure in summer; the gates are spread along a long waterfront.

  6. Plan your return trip early, and consider going back via Naxos to have more ferry choices.

09Alternatives

Other ways between Piraeus and Koufonisia.

For the way back, see our Koufonisia to Athens (Piraeus) page. If the direct boats do not suit your date, go via Naxos, which has many daily ferries from Piraeus and frequent short hops to Koufonisia, or via Paros. Amorgos is another link in the chain. Koufonisia has no airport, but Naxos (JNX) does, so some travellers fly Athens to Naxos and finish by boat; check flight options separately. The Piraeus to Amorgos, Iraklia, Schinoussa and Donousa pages cover the neighbouring islands on the same line.

Times and fares on these links come from one-day timetable samples, not live data.

Questions

Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry: frequently asked questions.

  • About 4 hours on the fastest Seajets high-speed boats, and roughly 7 hr 30 min to 8 hr 25 min on the Blue Star Ferries conventional ships. Ferryhopper gives an overall range of about 4 hr to 9.5 hr. On the 12 August 2026 sample, the direct Seajets sailing left at 08:30 and arrived at 12:30.
  • The lowest adult fare on Ferryhopper when we checked on 24 September 2026 was €42, and Blue Star Ferries started from €43 in its operator table. Seajets high-speed seats cost more, from about €79.70, and the 12 August 2026 sample sailing was €84.70. Indicative totals were €86 for two adults and €180 for two adults with a car. Fares change with the date and demand.
  • Usually no more than one or two. Ferryhopper lists the route on three to seven days a week all year. In summer Seajets can run daily, alongside Blue Star Ferries on three or four days a week, going by last year's data. The 12 August 2026 timetable sample showed one direct departure, at 08:30. In winter you will find only a few sailings a week.
  • Yes, the Blue Star Ferries ships carry vehicles, and Ferryhopper says the ferries on this route have car decks. Vehicle fares start at around €85 for a car, €33 for a motorbike and €155 for a camper, each way. Arrive about 90 minutes before departure with a vehicle. Most visitors leave the car behind, since Koufonisia is small and easy to explore on foot or by bike.
  • Search your date in the booking box on this page, which is run by our ferry partner Ferryhopper. It shows both operators, the durations and current fares, and sends e-tickets to your phone. For July and August book several weeks ahead, especially if you want a cabin on the conventional ship or a seat on the morning high-speed boat.
  • Seajets is the choice if time matters: about 4 hours, but fares start around €79.70. Blue Star Ferries is cheaper, from about €43, runs all year and has cabins, restaurants and space to walk around, but takes 7.5 to 8.5 hours. On a short holiday, the high-speed boat saves most of a day; on a budget or with a car, the Blue Star ship wins.
  • In summer the departures usually leave Piraeus in the morning; the 12 August 2026 sample showed a Seajets sailing at 08:30. There are also overnight crossings, with the latest departures of the day usually around 23:30, which arrive early the next morning. Times change through the year, so check the booking page for your date.
  • No. Even the fastest boat takes about 4 hours each way, and there are only one or two direct sailings on most days, so a same-day return is not practical. Koufonisia is best enjoyed over several nights, and it combines well with a few days on Naxos or Amorgos on the way there or back.
  • About 112 nautical miles, or roughly 208 km, by sea. That puts it well beyond Paros and Naxos, which is why the conventional ships need seven and a half hours or more. Koufonisia sits south-east of Naxos, on the way to Amorgos.
  • Yes. There are overnight crossings on the conventional ships, with the last departure of the day usually around 23:30, arriving in the early morning. In summer most sailings leave in the morning instead. On a night crossing, book a cabin for one to four people so you arrive rested rather than after a night in a lounge seat.
  • The Seajets high-speed boats, which make the trip in about 4 hours on their direct routing. Ferryhopper names the EurochampionJet 2 as the quickest vessel, and on the 12 August 2026 sample the Champions League Jet 1 also took 4 hours. Watch out for Seajets routings that call at more islands, since some took close to 8 hours in last year's data.
  • Strong meltemi winds in July and August can hold high-speed boats in port, and winter storms can stop sailings entirely. The operator will then offer another sailing or a refund through your booking. Consider going via Naxos, which has far more ferries from Piraeus and short hops to Koufonisia.
