The Journey

The Syros (Ermoupoli) to Lavrio crossing.

Leaving Syros for Lavrio is the quiet way back to the mainland. Instead of the crowds of Piraeus, you land at a small port on the south-east tip of Attica, a short drive from Athens airport and a long way from the city centre traffic. For travellers flying out, or heading to the eastern suburbs or the Sounion coast, that can save a lot of hassle.

The sailing starts in Ermoupoli, where the ship leaves from the harbour front of the island capital, right below the grand neoclassical town and the hill of Ano Syros. It is one of the few Cycladic ports where you can spend your last hours in a proper town, with museums, a theatre and a long row of cafés, rather than waiting at a remote quay.

What you give up is choice. Only Blue Star Ferries sails this direction, on about 2 days a week according to Ferryhopper, and journey times vary with the ship's itinerary: 3 hr 25 min on the quicker runs, 5 hr 45 min on most. It is a slow, cheap and comfortable crossing on a big ship, so treat it as a travel day and not a quick hop.

If you have a flight to catch, work backwards from it. Pick a sailing that lands with a generous margin, remember that the longer sailings are the norm, and have a plan for getting from Lavrio to the airport before you board.

How long the crossing takes

Plan for anything between 3 hr 25 min and 5 hr 45 min. Ferryhopper's schedule card for Syros to Lavrio gives 3 hr 25 min as the shortest trip, and in its monthly table, based on last year's data, only two months show that quicker time; the rest show 5 hr 45 min. The difference comes from the itinerary the Blue Star ship follows on the day, not from the weather or the season alone, so the duration printed on your booking is what counts. For comparison, the outbound Lavrio to Syros sailings ran from 3 hr 15 min to 5 hr 35 min in the same data. The straight-line distance is about 45 nautical miles.

04The ports

Where the Syros (Ermoupoli) to Lavrio ferry docks.

Departure port

Syros

JSY · 37.4436° N 24.9419° E

Ferries leave from the port of Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros, which sits in the middle of town rather than out on its own. The waterfront has parking, car rental offices, restaurants and hotels, and the island buses stop right there, so returning a hire car or arriving by bus from the beaches is straightforward. Ermoupoli handles ferries all year because Syros is the administrative centre of the Cyclades, and the harbour stays busy even in winter. Allow time to find your ship on the quay, and be ready to board well before the listed departure, particularly if you have a vehicle.

Arrival port

Athens (Lavrio)

LAV · 37.7131° N 24.0556° E

Lavrio is a former mining town on the south-east coast of Attica. It is about 60 km from central Athens but only around 35 km from Athens International Airport, which is why this route suits people with a flight to catch. KTEL Attica buses run every day between Lavrio and Pedion Areos in central Athens, taking about 2 hours depending on traffic; for the airport, a pre-booked taxi or transfer is the simplest choice. The port itself is compact, with tavernas nearby, and if you have spare time the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is close by.

05On Board

On board the Syros (Ermoupoli) to Lavrio ferry.

This is a Blue Star Ferries crossing on a large conventional ship, so you have room to walk around: indoor lounges with air-conditioning, open decks for the views back to Syros, and a café or snack bar for the hours ahead. Ferryhopper says no cabins are available on this route, so the whole trip is spent in the standard seating that comes with the ticket, which matters on the 5 hr 45 min sailings. Pets travel free, there are kennels on board, and there are facilities for passengers with reduced mobility. Wi-Fi is usually offered for a fee. There is no luggage check-in, and Blue Star allows up to 50 kg per passenger.

06Weather and cancellations

Wind, weather and cancellations on the Syros (Ermoupoli) to Lavrio route.

Between Syros and the Attica coast the ship crosses open sea that catches the meltemi, the strong summer north wind that usually peaks in July and August. Blue Star uses big conventional ships, which rarely stop for wind alone and are much steadier than small fast craft, but the port authority can still keep ships in port during a gale, and heavy weather can add time to an already long trip. If your sailing is cancelled, the operator will offer another sailing or a refund. With only about 2 sailings a week, the realistic backup is a ferry from Ermoupoli to Piraeus or Rafina, which run far more often.

07Travel Tips

Syros (Ermoupoli) to Lavrio ferry travel tips.

  1. Most sailings in last year's data took 5 hr 45 min, so do not count on the quicker 3 hr 25 min run unless your booking shows it.

  2. Flying out of Athens? Lavrio is about 35 km from the airport, but leave a wide margin in case the ship is late.

  3. Book a taxi or transfer from Lavrio in advance if you land in the evening; it is a small town.

  4. With no cabins on board, bring water, food and a warm layer for the air-conditioned lounges.

  5. If the Lavrio days do not fit your plans, Syros has many more sailings to Piraeus and Rafina.

Questions

Syros (Ermoupoli) to Lavrio ferry: frequently asked questions.

  • Between 3 hr 25 min and 5 hr 45 min. Ferryhopper gives 3 hr 25 min as the shortest trip, but in last year's monthly data most Blue Star sailings in this direction took 5 hr 45 min, with the quicker time in only two months. Check the duration shown for your date before you plan onward travel.
  • One adult started at €18 when we checked Ferryhopper on 24 September 2026. Couples, families and vehicle fares cost more; our Lavrio to Syros page lists the full set of lowest fares Ferryhopper showed for both directions, and the booking page shows the price for your exact sailing.
  • About 2 days a week. Ferryhopper lists the route from January to December, and last year's data showed Blue Star Ferries as the only operator, sailing in every month. There is no daily service, so check which days the ship runs in your week before fixing the rest of your trip.
  • There is only one: Blue Star Ferries, with a large conventional ship. That keeps the choice simple. It is slower than the fast boats on other Syros routes, but it is cheap, from €18 for one adult when we checked, carries cars and has room to move around on a long crossing.
  • Yes. The Blue Star ship has a car deck and carries cars and motorbikes. Because there are only about 2 sailings a week, vehicle space is limited, so reserve early in summer and arrive at the Ermoupoli quay with plenty of time before departure.
  • Search Syros to Lavrio on this page and you will see the sailings Ferryhopper has for your date, with the duration and fare for each. You book and pay on Ferryhopper, and the tickets arrive by email; on many sailings you can check in online and board with an e-ticket on your phone.
  • Nothing on this route is designed as an overnight sailing, and Ferryhopper says no cabins are sold on it. The longest sailings in last year's data took 5 hr 45 min. If you would rather sleep through a crossing, this is not the route for it; plan to travel by day in a lounge seat.
  • Lavrio is more a gateway than a destination, so time your visit around your ferry. Spring and autumn are pleasant for a walk around the old mining town or an evening trip to Cape Sounion. In July and August, arrive with transport already booked, as the roads towards Athens and the airport get busy.
  • No. Only conventional Blue Star sailings serve this direction, and the quickest run in last year's data took 3 hr 25 min. If speed matters, sail from Syros to Piraeus instead, which has many more departures, and continue from there.
  • The airport is about 35 km from Lavrio, so a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the quickest way. KTEL Attica buses from Lavrio head to Pedion Areos in central Athens instead, a ride of about 2 hours depending on traffic. Leave a comfortable buffer, since the ship can arrive later than planned.
  • Blue Star's big ships usually keep sailing in the summer meltemi, but a gale can keep them in port. If that happens, the operator will rebook or refund you. The next Lavrio sailing may be days away, so the faster fix is usually a ferry from Syros to Piraeus or Rafina.
  • Yes. Ferryhopper lists Lavrio to Syros sailings all year, on 2 to 3 days a week, taking 3 hr 15 min to 5 hr 35 min, with one adult from €18. See our Lavrio to Syros page for the full picture.
