In April 2026, Greece expanded its protected "untrodden beaches" initiative to 251 locations — pristine coastal sites where commercial activity is strictly banned. Several beaches across the Cyclades are on the list. Here's what it means for your island trip.

→ Best beaches in the Cyclades → → Hidden beaches guide →

What Are "Untrodden Beaches"?

The Apatites Paralies (Untrodden Beaches) program protects Greece's most ecologically and aesthetically sensitive coastal areas. Many fall within the EU's Natura 2000 network. The government designates them to prevent environmental degradation from over-commercialization.

What's Banned on Untrodden Beaches

ActivityStatus
Swimming and sunbathing✅ Fully permitted
Bringing your own towel/umbrella✅ Permitted
Walking and photography✅ Permitted
Rental sunbeds and umbrellas❌ Banned
Commercial water sports (jet skis, kayak rentals)❌ Banned
Beach bars or refreshment stands❌ Banned
Permanent structures❌ Banned
Motorized vehicles on sand❌ Banned
Gatherings of 10+ people❌ Restricted
Amplified music/sound systems❌ Banned

Key point: You can absolutely still enjoy these beaches. They're simply returned to their natural state — no commercial infrastructure, no crowds of sunbeds, no jet ski noise. Bring your own towel, water, snacks, and shade.

Cyclades Beaches on the Protected List

The official register includes beaches across the Cyclades. Notable protected locations include:

Naxos

Several beaches on Naxos fall under protection — typically remote coves on the island's wilder north and east coasts, away from the popular Agios Prokopios–Plaka strip.

Folegandros

Remote beaches on Folegandros's dramatic coastline are protected. The island's most famous beaches (Angali, Agios Nikolaos) have always been naturally "untrodden" — accessible only by boat or hiking trail.

Small Cyclades (Koufonisia, Iraklia, Schinoussa)

  • Pori Beach (Koufonisia) — One of the most famous Small Cyclades beaches, now under protection
  • Italida Beach — Protected cove
  • Beaches on Keros — The uninhabited island between Koufonisia and Amorgos has protected shoreline
  • Various coves on Iraklia and Schinoussa

Other Islands

Check locally when visiting any Cyclades island — the list is subject to updates as the Ministry conducts additional ecological assessments.

Why This Is Good News for Travelers

1. Pristine Natural Beauty

Protected beaches stay wild. No rows of plastic sunbeds, no jet ski noise, no competing sound systems. Just sand, sea, and sky.

2. Ecological Health

Healthy seagrass meadows (Posidonia) mean clearer water and better snorkeling. Protected beaches support biodiversity — you're more likely to see marine life in undisturbed areas.

3. Authentic Experience

These beaches represent the Greece that travelers dream about: untouched coves, crystal water, and complete peace. They're the reason many people choose the Cyclades over more developed Mediterranean destinations.

How to Find the Full Official List

The complete register of 251 beaches is published by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy through Joint Ministerial Decisions (JMD). The list is updated periodically.

Practical tips:

  • Ask your hotel or local tourist office which nearby beaches are designated
  • Local boat tour operators know which coves are protected
  • Tourism information boards at ports often display protected beach maps

Practical Tips for Visiting Protected Beaches

What to Bring

  • Sun shade: No rental umbrellas available — bring a portable beach tent or large umbrella
  • Water and snacks: No beach bars or vendors — pack everything you need
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: These are ecologically sensitive areas
  • Bag for trash: Leave nothing behind — pack out everything
  • Water shoes: Some protected beaches have rocky entries

What NOT to Do

  • Don't set up portable speakers or amplified music
  • Don't bring inflatable water toys that could damage seagrass
  • Don't light fires or BBQs
  • Don't drive any vehicle onto the beach
  • Don't leave trash — these beaches have no cleanup services

The Best "Untrodden" Beach Experiences in the Cyclades

Even beyond the official list, the Cyclades have dozens of naturally wild beaches worth seeking out:

The Bigger Environmental Picture

The untrodden beaches program is part of Greece's broader environmental strategy:

  • Southern Cyclades Marine Park: Presidential Decree expected by end 2026, protecting Posidonia seagrass and marine species
  • 30% marine protection target: Greece aims to protect 30% of territorial waters by 2030
  • Coastal construction ban: New 25-meter setback from coastline for all construction
  • Sustainable tourism framework: Bed capacity limits on "saturated" islands

→ Santorini overtourism measures →

Plan Your Beach-Hopping Trip

The Cyclades remain home to the most beautiful beaches in Europe — protected or not. The untrodden beaches initiative simply ensures the wildest, most pristine stretches stay that way.
