Andros is large and mountainous. Driving between the main towns takes time, so choosing the right base is critical. The island has three main hubs, each offering a very different experience.

1. Chora (Andros Town)

Best for: Culture, architecture, and sophistication

Unlike most Cycladic capitals, Andros Chora is built on a narrow peninsula rather than a hill. It was home to wealthy shipowners, resulting in neoclassical mansions and marble-paved pedestrian streets rather than typical whitewashed cubes.

Why stay here:

  • World-class museums (Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art)
  • Incredible dining and sophisticated cafes
  • Aristocratic, elegant atmosphere

Best Hotels in Chora:

  • Micra Anglia Boutique Hotel: A stunning 5-star neoclassical mansion right in the center of town.
  • Camara Suites: Beautifully restored historical building with sea views.
  • Anemomiloi Andros: Boutique hotel just outside the pedestrian zone with a nice pool.

2. Batsi

Best for: Families, beach access, and nightlife

Batsi is the primary tourist resort of Andros. Built amphitheatrically around a sandy bay, it offers the most traditional "summer holiday" feel on the island.

Why stay here:

  • Sheltered, organized sandy beach right in town
  • High concentration of tavernas, bars, and cafes
  • Excellent base for families

Best Hotels in Batsi:

  • Mare E Vista Epaminondas Hotel: Excellent views over the bay and a great pool.
  • Blue Bay Resort Village: Very family-friendly, located just outside the main town.
  • Chryssi Akti, Sure Hotel Collection: Right on the main beach.

3. Gavrio (The Port)

Best for: Convenience, hikers, and exploring northern beaches

Gavrio is the ferry port. While it lacks the aristocratic charm of Chora or the resort feel of Batsi, it's highly practical and has excellent dining options.

Why stay here:

  • You don't have to drive far after a ferry ride
  • Close to the island's best sandy beaches (Agios Petros, Golden Sand, Kypri)
  • Good base for starting several major hiking routes

Best Hotels:

  • Perrakis Hotel (Kypri Beach): A short drive from Gavrio, offering excellent sea views and beach access.
  • Andros Holiday Hotel: Very close to the port with a large pool.

Final Recommendation

  • For culture and couples: Stay in Chora.
  • For families and beach lovers: Stay in Batsi.
  • For quick ferry access: Stay near Gavrio.
