01The short version
Introduction to Thirasia.
Thirasia is Santorini's quiet sister, the fragment of the volcanic caldera that time forgot. While Santorini buzzes with millions of visitors, Thirasia sits directly opposite, offering the same spectacular caldera views with about 1% of the tourists. With only a handful of places to stay, this is the Cyclades' most exclusive secret.

Manolas
The clifftop village facing Oia across the caldera, with a handful of rooms, tavernas, and the same staggering view Santorini charges €600/night for, in silence. Reached by 270 steps (or the road) from Korfos below.

The old port at the foot of the cliff, where the Oia boats land: a string of waterfront tavernas grilling for day-trippers, a swimming jetty into deep caldera water, and a couple of rooms for those who like sleeping at sea level.

The island's working port on the north side, with a small beach, the ferry quay for car boats from Athinios, and a few quiet rooms. The church of Agia Irini here gave Santorini ("Santa Irini") its name.

04Planning advice
How to plan your Thirasia stay.
When to book
May–September. Most visitors come as day-trippers from Santorini.
Practical tips
Tour boats from Santorini include Thirasia stops. Local ferry from Oia's Ammoudi port runs in summer. No cars or taxis. Walk everywhere.
How to choose
Manolas is essentially the only option. A handful of rooms exist at Korfos (old port) and Riva.
For families
Only for adventurous families comfortable with steep steps and minimal facilities.
For couples
The same caldera views as Santorini, but in absolute silence. Sunset from Manolas with no one around is arguably the most exclusive experience in the Cyclades.
FAQ
Common questions: staying in Thirasia.
- Local boats from Oia's Ammoudi port and car ferries from Athinios cross daily in season; most caldera boat tours also stop at Korfos. No long-haul ferries, you come via Santorini.
- Yes, a handful of rooms exist in Manolas and at the ports. Overnight is the whole point: when the last tour boat leaves, you have Santorini's caldera view entirely to yourself.
- Rooms from €25/night, caldera-view rooms €60–120, a fraction of equivalent views across the water in Oia.
- Manolas for the caldera view, Korfos for waterfront tavernas and swimming, Riva for ferry-day practicality. The island is small enough to walk between all three.
- It IS Santorini, geologically, the other wall of the same caldera, without the crowds, the prices or the noise. If your dream is the view rather than the scene, Thirasia delivers it for a tenth of the cost.
