Rafina to Tinos is the quickest sea route from Athens to one of the most rewarding islands in the Cyclades. Tinos is still less crowded than neighbouring Mykonos, yet it has marble villages, more than 1,000 ornate dovecotes in the countryside, a good taverna scene and the great pilgrimage church of Panagia Evangelistria above the harbour. Because Rafina lies east of Athens, close to the airport, you can land in the morning and be on Tinos by lunchtime.
Conventional ferries usually call at other islands, such as Andros, on the way, which is why they take more than twice as long as the fast boats. You arrive at the main port in Tinos Town (Chora) on the south of the island, where the harbour front is lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and banks, and the bus station is close by.
Tinos fits neatly into a northern Cyclades trip. It is a short hop from Mykonos and Syros, so many travellers combine Tinos with one or both, then return to Rafina or Piraeus. It also works as a calmer base for day trips to Mykonos.
A few things to know before booking. On this route the fast boats are not always dearer than the conventional ferries: on our 12 August 2026 sample the 07:10 Tera Jet cost from €28.70, against €35 on the conventional ships, so compare both. If you plan to explore the villages, a car or scooter is useful, and the conventional ferries carry vehicles.
