Kimolos is one of the smallest and least visited islands of the Cyclades, lying just a nautical mile from the northwest coast of Milos. Kimolos is part of the Milos volcanic arc. Its landscape was shaped by ancient eruptions, producing the white chalk (kimolia gi) from which the island takes its name. This "Kimolian earth" was prized in antiquity for its use in cleaning and bleaching fabrics.
In the 14th century, the island's inhabitants built the Kastro — a fortified settlement in Chorio where homes formed a defensive outer wall against pirate raids. Parts of this medieval fortress still stand, incorporated into the village's architecture.
Kimolos and neighboring Milos were important mining centers. Silver and minerals were extracted from the volcanic rock, and the island's bentonite and perlite deposits are still commercially important today, though mining is conducted sustainably.
Unlike many Cycladic islands that experienced tourism booms, Kimolos remained largely overlooked. This has proven a blessing — the island retains traditional customs, architecture, and a close-knit community that warmly welcomes the small number of visitors who discover it.
