Lesser Cyclades Guide 2026: Koufonisia, Iraklia & Schinoussa

Aerial view of the Cyclades islands scattered across the turquoise Aegean Sea at golden hour.
Aerial view of the Cyclades islands scattered across the turquoise Aegean Sea at golden hour.
Twenty-four islands, one impossibly blue sea — the Cyclades from above.

The Lesser Cyclades sit between Naxos and Amorgos like a secret the Aegean tries to keep. Where Mykonos and Santorini are global celebrities, these three islands are known mainly to people who have been to Greece more than twice — or who discovered them through a travel writer friend who made them promise not to tell anyone.

We're telling you. Here's everything you need.

→ Koufonisia deep-dive guide → → Full Emily in Paris Cyclades Guide → → Island hopping master guide →

Overview: The Three Islands

IslandSizePopulationVibeBest For
Koufonisia3.8 km²~400 permanentParadise foundBeaches, swimming, social scene
Iraklia18 km²~120 permanentOff-grid solitudeHiking, cave, total quiet
Schinoussa8.6 km²~250 permanentMiddle groundPeaceful, beaches, affordable

Getting There

The Lesser Cyclades are reached via Naxos. This is the key logistics piece.

Step 1: Get to Naxos

FromDurationOperator
Piraeus (Athens)2h30m (high-speed) / 5h30m (conventional)SeaJets, Blue Star
Paros40 minMultiple operators
Mykonos1h30mHigh-speed services

Step 2: Express Skopelitis from Naxos

The Express Skopelitis is the lifeline of the Lesser Cyclades — a small local ferry that departs Naxos every morning (and afternoon in peak season) and calls at Iraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonisia, and Donoussa.

Timetable (approximate, 2026 summer):

  • Naxos → Iraklia: 1h45m
  • Iraklia → Schinoussa: 20 min
  • Schinoussa → Koufonisia: 25 min
  • Koufonisia → Donoussa: 1h30m

Check schedules and book on Ferryhopper →

Key tip: The Skopelitis is a small vessel and fills up in July–August. Book your inter-island legs as soon as you know your dates.

Koufonisia: The Caribbean of Greece

Koufonisia (technically two islands — Ano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi) is the most famous of the Lesser Cyclades and the most developed in terms of visitor infrastructure. "Developed" is relative — there are no hotels over 20 rooms, no beach clubs, no DJs.

The Beaches

Pori beach is the main event. A crescent of sand at the eastern end of the island, with water so turquoise it looks photoshopped. A 15-minute walk or short boat ride from the port.

Fanos beach — accessible by a coastal path (20 min walk). Calmer water, better for snorkelling.

Italida — the naturist beach, 30 min walk from the port. Remote and beautiful.

Platia Pounta — the closest beach to the village. Sandy, shallow, good for families.

The Village

Ano Koufonisi village is one whitewashed cluster with tavernas, a small supermarket, a pharmacy, and one ATM. The morning fish market (when local boats come in) is worth seeing.

Best tavernas: Ask locals the day of your arrival — the best spots change seasonally. Look for the ones with hand-written menus and plastic chairs.

Kato Koufonisi

Accessible by small boat from Ano Koufonisi (daily service in summer, 10 min). Completely uninhabited. Wild beaches and caves. One of the great day-trips in the Cyclades.

→ Koufonisia complete guide →

Iraklia: Total Solitude

Iraklia is where you go when Koufonisia feels too crowded. At 120 permanent residents and no tourist infrastructure to speak of, it is as close to untouched Greek island life as you can find in the Cyclades.

Ag. Ioannis Cave

The island's defining attraction. A spectacular stalactite cave used as a hiding place during pirate raids. A 2-hour round-trip hike from Ag. Georgios village. Take water, a torch, and shoes with grip. Worth every step.

Livadi Beach

The main beach. Dark sand, clear water, a handful of sunbeds. The pace of life here is: swim, eat, sleep, repeat.

Practical Notes

  • No ATM — bring all the cash you need
  • Limited dining options — 2–3 tavernas. Book ahead in peak season.
  • Mobile signal — patchy. Prepare for a digital detox.
  • Medical care — basic health clinic. Travel insurance is advisable.

Schinoussa: The Sweet Spot

Between the relative bustle of Koufonisia and the total seclusion of Iraklia, Schinoussa offers a balanced experience. The island has a hilltop Chora with views over the Aegean, several small beaches, and a calm atmosphere.

Mersini Beach

The main port beach. Calm, clear, shallow. A 5-minute walk from the ferry dock.

Tsigouri Beach

A 25-minute walk from Chora. Sandy, sheltered, excellent water. Bring your own shade.

Ammoudia Beach

The most secluded option. 40 minutes on foot from the village. Rarely visited.

Recommended 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Naxos → Iraklia

Take the morning Express Skopelitis from Naxos. Arrive Iraklia mid-morning. Check in. Afternoon swim at Livadi. Sunset from the port.

Day 2: Iraklia — Cave Hike

Morning: hike to Ag. Ioannis Cave (start early before the heat). Afternoon: collapse on the beach. Evening: dinner at a portside taverna.

Day 3: Iraklia → Schinoussa

Morning ferry (20 min). Check into your guesthouse. Walk to Tsigouri beach. Evening in Chora.

Day 4: Schinoussa → Koufonisia

Morning ferry (25 min). Drop your bags. Head immediately to Pori beach. Afternoon: Kato Koufonisi day boat. Evening: the village at its most beautiful.

Day 5: Koufonisia Full Day

Nothing is scheduled. Wake up when you want. Swim. Eat. Swim again. This is why you came.

Return: Morning Express Skopelitis back to Naxos. Onward connections to Athens, Mykonos, or Santorini from Naxos.

Packing for the Lesser Cyclades

  • Cash — plenty. ATMs are rare, malfunctioning, and out of cash in peak season.
  • Sunscreen — limited shops, bring from Athens or your last island.
  • Snorkelling gear — the water is extraordinary and the rental options are minimal.
  • Torch/headlamp — for the Iraklia cave and for walking between villages at night.
  • Downloaded maps — offline Google Maps for each island. Signal is unreliable.

The Vibe Test: Are the Lesser Cyclades for You?

You'll love them if: You want genuine Greek island life, pristine water, no beach clubs, and zero posturing.

Give them a miss if: You need reliable WiFi, decent ATM access, nightlife, air conditioning, or more than two restaurant choices per island.
