History & Geology

Historical Background

Mykonos has been inhabited since the 4th millennium BC and was a center of the Cycladic Civilization. In 1207, the Venetian Marco Sanudo created the Duchy of the Archipelago with Mykonos as its capital, leaving a legacy of towers and castles. The island was the mythological birthplace of Zeus and where Dionysus met Ariadne.

Landscape & Geology

Mykonos is the largest Cycladic island at 86 km², featuring Delos Island (1003m)—the highest peak in the Cyclades—fertile valleys, and marble quarries. The island's unique geology includes marble, emery, and granite formations.
