What Happened: The 2026 Seismic Sequence

In early 2026, Santorini experienced a sequence of earthquakes registering between M3.5 and M5.1. The events were widely reported in international media, some with alarming headlines that outpaced the actual risk level.

  • The Hellenic Seismological Institute (HL-HSI) classified it as a typical Aegean seismic swarm

What the Science Says

Santorini sits on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. The island's dramatic caldera is the result of the Minoan eruption (~1600 BCE), one of the largest volcanic events in human history. Since then, smaller eruptions have occurred at Nea Kameni (the black island in the caldera centre), most recently in 1950.

The current low-level seismicity is normal for this geological environment. The HL-HSI measures hundreds of micro-earthquakes annually in the region, most are imperceptible. The 2026 sequence was above average but within the range documented multiple times in the past 50 years.

Comparison with past sequences:

  • 1956: M7.5 earthquake caused significant damage and a small tsunami. This is the reference event.
  • 2011–2012: Seismic swarm with over 800 events (max M3.9). No damage. No advisories.
  • 2026: M5.1 maximum. Minor cosmetic damage. No advisories.
