The short answer: Yes, Santorini is safe. The island is open, hotels are operating, ferries are running, and no government has issued a travel advisory against visiting. Here is the complete picture.

→ Santorini island guide → · Ultimate Santorini guide 2026 →

What Happened: The 2026 Seismic Sequence

In early 2026, Santorini experienced a sequence of earthquakes registering between M3.5 and M5.1. The events were widely reported in international media, some with alarming headlines that outpaced the actual risk level.

Key facts:

  • The sequence was tectonic (fault-related), not a volcanic eruption precursor
  • The Hellenic Seismological Institute (HL-HSI) classified it as a typical Aegean seismic swarm
  • The largest event (M5.1) was felt in Fira and Oia but caused no structural collapses
  • The Greek Civil Protection authority issued standard monitoring alerts, not evacuation orders
  • Ferry services and the Santorini airport (JTR) were not suspended at any point

Current Status (May 2026)

SystemStatus
Santorini Airport (JTR)✅ Operating normally
Ferry port (Athinios)✅ Operating normally
Hotels & accommodation✅ All certified and open
Caldera walking paths✅ Open (some sections of the old Fira–Oia path have repair work)
Cruise ship calls✅ Resuming on full 2026 schedule
Civil Protection advisory✅ Monitoring only — no travel restrictions

What the Science Says

Santorini sits on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. The island's dramatic caldera is the result of the Minoan eruption (~1600 BCE) — one of the largest volcanic events in human history. Since then, smaller eruptions have occurred at Nea Kameni (the black island in the caldera centre), most recently in 1950.

The current low-level seismicity is normal for this geological environment. The HL-HSI measures hundreds of micro-earthquakes annually in the region — most are imperceptible. The 2026 sequence was above average but within the range documented multiple times in the past 50 years.

Comparison with past sequences:

  • 1956: M7.5 earthquake caused significant damage and a small tsunami. This is the reference event.
  • 2011–2012: Seismic swarm with over 800 events (max M3.9). No damage. No advisories.
  • 2026: M5.1 maximum. Minor cosmetic damage. No advisories.

Hotel & Accommodation Safety

Following the seismic sequence, the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport conducted structural assessments of caldera-front properties in Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira. All hotel and villa properties that remained open passed these assessments.

What this means for your booking:

  • You can book Santorini accommodation with confidence
  • If you have an existing booking and are concerned, your property's reception can share their structural certification on request
  • Comprehensive travel insurance is always advisable in any seismically active region

Travel Insurance Considerations

The standard advice for seismically active destinations:

  1. Book with cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) insurance if you want maximum flexibility
  2. Check your existing travel policy — most standard policies cover natural disaster disruption
  3. EU Package Travel Directive applies if you booked a package — you're protected if the destination becomes unsafe (the current status does not qualify)

Getting to Santorini in 2026

By air: Santorini Airport (JTR) operates year-round with Aegean Airlines from Athens and seasonal direct routes from 40+ European cities.

By ferry: Book ferry tickets on Ferryhopper → The main port is Athinios (Santorini New Port). Athinios is operating on its normal schedule.

What to Do in Santorini — 2026 Season

Despite the seismic headlines, Santorini's 2026 season is shaping up to be strong. Early booking data from accommodation providers shows occupancy tracking above 2025 levels for July and August.

Top things to do:

  • Watch sunset from Oia (arrive by 17:30 to secure a spot, or book a caldera-view restaurant)
  • Hike from Fira to Oia (8.9 km, 3–4 hours, stunning caldera views the entire way)
  • Wine tasting at Santo Wines or Venetsanos Winery
  • Boat tour of the caldera — visit Nea Kameni volcanic island and the hot springs
