Authenticity: Folegandros has 800 permanent residents and limits daily visitor numbers. Locals still outnumber tourists in September. No cruise ships: Folegandros has no cruise ship port. Chora on a cliff: Arguably as dramatic as Oia but with none of the crowds. Walking to Panagia church (only accessible on foot, up 300 steps) rivals any Santorini experience. Hiking: The 9km trail from Chora to Angali beach is exceptional.

Santorini's caldera views are physically larger and more dramatic (the caldera is 12km wide, a sunken volcanic crater). Santorini has far more infrastructure: 300+ hotels, dozens of restaurants, a wine industry, Akrotiri. Folegandros has perhaps 30 hotels total and a handful of excellent tavernas.
