Discover Cyclades

The Definitive 2026 Neighborhood & Area Guide
Ios is the Cyclades' island of transformation, once known solely as a backpacker party destination, it's got evolved into a sophisticated island that caters to every travel style while keeping its youthful energy intact. The stunning hilltop Chora with its 12 windmills, the golden sands of Mylopotas with its world-class beach clubs, and the remote beauty of Manganari create a thrilling contrast. With 64+ properties, Ios offers everything from luxury clifftop suites to buzzy hostels, often at prices that undercut its more famous neighbours.

Ios' hilltop capital is a show-stopper, a classic Cycladic maze of whitewashed houses, churches, and 12 sentinel windmills, all cascading down a hill with panoramic sea views. Chora has the island's best restaurants, bars, and the famous nightlife strip. Hotels range from design-forward boutiques to traditional guesthouses.
A 1km golden beach with organised sunbeds, beach clubs, and water sports. Mylopotas is where the action happens by day. The beach is backed by a road with tavernas, mini-markets, and a mix of hostels and mid-range hotels. Several upscale properties have opened here recently, evolving the area beyond its party-only reputation.
The spectacular southern bay of Manganari is the island's most beautiful beach, crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine golden sand, and a sense of peaceful isolation. Access is by car (bumpy road) or summer boat service. A handful of low-key beachfront properties offer the ultimate escape.
Ios' luxury segment has grown dramatically. New boutique resorts and clifftop suites in Chora offer infinity pools, contemporary Cycladic design, and service that rivals Mykonos, at half the price. Several beach clubs now have associated luxury accommodations.
Chora's boutique hotels are the island's sweet spot, intimate properties with stunning views, rooftop terraces, and curated design. Many are converted traditional houses blending old-world charm with modern comforts.
Private villas with pools are positioned on the hillsides between Chora and the beaches, offering privacy, views, and easy access to both nightlife and nature. Great value for groups of 4+.
Simple, clean studios are available around Mylopotas and the Chora area, many family-run with kitchenettes and terraces. Perfect for longer stays and those watching their budget.
Ios retains its backpacker roots with some of the best hostels in the Cyclades, social, well-located, and genuinely affordable. Dorms from €15/night and private rooms from €35/night make Ios one of the cheapest Cycladic islands.
Peak season (July–August) brings the full beach club experience and vibrant nightlife. June and September offer warm seas, lower prices, and a more relaxed vibe. May and October are peaceful, some tavernas and beach clubs may be closed, but the weather is still pleasant. Ios has a shorter active season than Santorini, with most properties open June–September.
Ferries from Athens (Piraeus) take 5–7 hours, with high-speed options in 3.5 hours. The port is at the base of the hill, most hotels offer transfers. An ATV or car is useful for reaching Manganari and island exploration, but the Chora–Mylopotas shuttle bus runs frequently. The walk between the port, Chora, and Mylopotas is manageable but involves hills.
Your Ios choice depends on whether you're here for the party or the escape. Stay in Chora for nightlife, views, and restaurants. Mylopotas for the beach-party lifestyle. Manganari for total seclusion. For the both worlds together, Chora is the winner, you'll walk down to Mylopotas beach by day and retreat to your peaceful hilltop hotel at night.
Ios is more family-friendly than its reputation suggests. Mylopotas beach is expansive with organised sunbeds, and the southern beaches (especially Manganari) are calm and beautiful. Choose accommodation away from the Chora nightlife strip, the area around the port and upper Chora is peaceful. Several newer hotels cater specifically to families with pools and larger rooms.
Ios offers romantic moments that surprise: sunset from the Chora windmills overlooking Homer's supposed tomb, a secluded day at Manganari beach with no one around, dinner at a cliffside restaurant above the Aegean, and a moonlit walk through the whitewashed lanes. The island's emerging luxury boutique hotels offer romantic packages that are exceptional value compared to Santorini.
