June–September is the active season. July–August is peak; book 2–3 months ahead. September is ideal for hiking with cooler temperatures. Ferry connections are less frequent than to bigger islands.
Ferries from Piraeus take 7–9 hours (or 5h high-speed). Also accessible from Naxos (2–3h). A car or ATV is useful for exploring, the island is long and narrow. The bus connects Katapola, Chora, and Aegiali.
Stay in Chora for atmosphere and hiking access. Katapola for ferry convenience. Aegiali for beaches and the northeastern hiking trails.
Amorgos suits adventurous families with older children who enjoy hiking and nature. Aegiali has the best family beach. Facilities are basic but genuine.
