The Route: Step by Step
Stage 1: Fira to Firostefani (1.5 km, 20 minutes)
Start at the cliff-edge promenade near the Fira cable car station or the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral. The path is fully paved and level, weaving between caldera-view hotels, restaurants, and gift shops. This is the easiest and most urban section.
Photo stop: The Three Bells of Fira (Anastasi Church), with its blue domes framed by the caldera. Best light: early morning.
If you are staying at Athina Luxury Suites in Fira, you are literally on the trail. Walk out the door and turn right.
Firostefani feels like a quieter extension of Fira. Stop for a coffee at one of the cliff-side cafés. This is also where you will find 180° Sunset Bar, one of the trendiest spots on the island for evening cocktails (save it for later).
Stage 2: Firostefani to Imerovigli (1.5 km, 20 minutes)
The path remains paved and well-marked. As you leave Firostefani, the villages thin out and the views open up. You start to feel the scale of the caldera properly.
Imerovigli is called the Balcony to the Aegean, and the name is earned. It sits at the highest point of the caldera rim (about 320 metres above sea level).
Detour: Skaros Rock — From Imerovigli, a 20-minute side trail leads to Skaros Rock, the dramatic rocky promontory that juts out into the caldera. The views from Skaros are the most dramatic on the entire hike. There is a small chapel at the base. Allow 40 minutes for the full Skaros detour and return. Read our Imerovigli guide for details.
Stage 3: Imerovigli to the Wilderness (4 km, 1 hour)
This is the wild section. After leaving Imerovigli, the paved paths end and the terrain shifts to dirt tracks, loose rock, and narrow trails along the cliff edge. This is where the hike earns its "moderate" rating.
The path dips down into a valley, climbs back up over a ridge, and undulates through scrubby terrain with no buildings, no shade, and no water. It is beautiful and exposed. In July and August, this section is brutally hot between 11am and 3pm.
Key points:
- Wear proper shoes (trainers minimum, hiking shoes ideal). The trail is loose volcanic rock in places
- Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person
- Hat and sun protection are mandatory, not optional
- The path is occasionally marked with cairns and blue/white paint dashes, but some junctions require attention
There are no services (no café, no toilet, no shade) for the full 4 km between Imerovigli and the outskirts of Oia.
Stage 4: Into Oia (3.5 km, 40 minutes)
The path gradually transitions back to paved surfaces as you approach Oia from the east. You will enter through the quieter residential end of the village, past the remains of the old castle, and eventually reach the main promenade.
Reward: You have arrived at the most photographed village in Greece. Find a table, order a cold Mythos, and congratulate yourself.
What to Bring
