11 Best Things to Do in Serifos 2026
Last updated: May 2026 · Rugged, authentic and gloriously low-key
Serifos is one of the western Cyclades' best-kept secrets: a wild, mountainous island crowned by a Chora that tumbles down a peak like a white avalanche. Add empty beaches, a fascinating mining past, and superb tavernas, and you have the perfect antidote to the busy islands.

🏘️ Chora & Villages
1. Climb the Hilltop Chora
One of the most spectacular Choras in Greece, spilling down a steep cone high above the port. Walk up through the lanes to the two squares (Kato and Pano Piazza) and on to the ruined medieval Kastro at the summit for a vast Aegean panorama.
2. The Kastro & Windmills
At the very top, the remains of the Venetian castle and a cluster of churches reward the climb. The ridge windmills nearby are a classic sunset spot.
3. Livadi Port
The lively harbour where ferries dock, lined with tavernas, bars and a sandy beach. The natural base for most visitors.
⛏️ Mining Heritage
4. Megalo Livadi & the Iron Mines
On the southwest coast, Serifos was a major iron-mining centre until the mid-20th century. The evocative ruins include the old company buildings and the striking metal loading bridge over the bay, scene of a famous 1916 miners' strike.
5. Walk the Miners' Trails
A network of old mining and shepherd paths crisscrosses the island, passing ruined headframes, chapels and dry-stone terraces. The Chora-to-Psili Ammos and Megalo Livadi routes are favourites.
🏖️ Beaches
6. Psili Ammos
Regularly rated one of the best beaches in the Cyclades: soft golden sand, shallow turquoise water and two tavernas. A short drive or hike from Chora.
7. Agios Sostis
A double-bay beach joined by a sandy isthmus with a little white chapel, calm and sheltered on either side depending on the wind.
8. Livadakia & Karavi
Livadakia is the organised, family-friendly beach near the port; Karavi is the wild, unspoilt nudist beach a little further along.
🍽️ Food & Experiences
9. Eat Local: Revithada & Marathotiganites
Sunday revithada (slow-baked chickpea stew) is the island dish, traditionally cooked overnight in a wood oven. Try also marathotiganites (fennel fritters) and local xinomyzithra cheese.
10. Cyclops Mythology
According to legend, Serifos is where Perseus brought the head of Medusa and turned King Polydectes to stone. Look for the petrified landscape that inspired the myth.
11. Boat Trip to Hidden Coves
Several beaches and sea caves on the rugged coast are easiest reached by boat; ask at Livadi for seasonal trips.
