Getting from Athens to Naxos is one of the most rewarding journeys in the Greek islands. Whether you're chasing the longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades, the famous local graviera cheese, or simply a quieter alternative to Mykonos, Naxos delivers. At Discover Cyclades, we've made this crossing dozens of times and we're here to save you the guesswork.

The good news: the Athens–Naxos route is well-served, affordable, and, on a clear summer day, genuinely beautiful. The ferry ride through the Saronic and Aegean waters, with islands rising on both sides, is half the experience.

Ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Naxos

The ferry is the main and most popular way to reach Naxos, and for good reason. Piraeus port is well-connected to Athens city centre (Metro Line 1, about 30–40 minutes from Syntagma Square). Once you're at the port, follow signs to Gate E9, that's the standard departure gate for Cyclades ferries.

High-Speed Ferries (3.5–4 hours)

If you want to get to Naxos quickly, high-speed ferries are the way to go. These are catamaran-style or fast mono-hull vessels that cut across the Aegean at speed. The main operators on this route are:

  • SeaJets, operates the Worldchampion Jet and similar vessels. Typically the fastest option, reaching Naxos in around 3.5 hours. SeaJets also stops at Paros en route, so the Paros–Naxos leg adds only another 25 minutes.
  • Fast Ferries, a reliable high-speed operator with comfortable seating and a good punctuality record. Journey times are similar to SeaJets.

High-speed ferries are more affected by rough sea conditions (Beaufort 7+ warnings can cause cancellations), so always check the weather if you're travelling in the shoulder season.

Fares: expect to pay €55–€70 for a standard seat in summer 2026.

Conventional Ferries (5–6 hours)

Conventional ferries are the classic Cyclades experience. These are large, multi-deck ships with comfortable indoor lounges, outdoor deck space, cafeterias, and ample luggage room. The crossing takes longer, but you can move around, grab a coffee, and watch the islands pass. Many travellers prefer this option.

  • Blue Star Ferries, the backbone of Cyclades ferry connections. The Blue Star Naxos and Blue Star Paros ships serve this route regularly and are large, modern vessels with air-conditioned lounges. Blue Star often stops at Syros and Paros before reaching Naxos, which adds time but gives you beautiful sea views.

Fares: deck-class starts at around €40–€45. Cabin upgrades are available for overnight or very early crossings.

Flying from Athens to Naxos

Naxos does have its own airport, Naxos Airport (JNX), located about 1.5 km from Chora (Naxos town). It's a small domestic airport with a single short runway, so it only handles smaller propeller aircraft and regional turboprops.

Sky Express operates seasonal domestic flights between Athens International Airport (ATH) and Naxos (JNX). The flight itself takes approximately 40–50 minutes. However, there are several things to keep in mind:

  • Flights are not available year-round, service is typically seasonal (spring to autumn), and scheduling varies by year.
  • Frequency is low, you may find only a few flights per week, and availability can be tight in peak summer.
  • Prices aren't always cheaper once you factor in airport transfers at both ends and potential connection delays.
  • The airport has limited facilities, and flight cancellations due to wind conditions at JNX are more common than at major airports.

For most travellers, especially those coming from central Athens, the ferry is the more practical and often more enjoyable option. The flying option is best suited to those who can't manage a long boat journey, or who have very limited time and can find a direct flight at a reasonable price.

Best Time to Travel from Athens to Naxos

Naxos is a three-season destination, and the best time to make this crossing depends on what you're after:

  • May–June: Our favourite window. Ferry frequency is already high, crowds are manageable, and accommodation prices are reasonable. The sea is calm and the island is green.
  • July–August: Peak season. Every ferry route runs at maximum frequency, but boats fill up fast, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings when Athenians travel en masse. Book at least 2–4 weeks ahead.
  • September–October: Excellent weather, warm sea, and a more relaxed pace on the island. A great choice for couples and independent travellers.
  • November–April: Ferry frequency drops sharply and some routes operate only 3–4 times per week. Not recommended unless you enjoy off-season quiet.

Booking Tips

Book online, always. Greek ferry tickets are almost always cheaper online than at the port kiosk on the day. The main platforms to use are the ferry company's own websites or consolidated booking sites.

Check departure times carefully. Some crossings depart very early (05:30–06:00) or late at night. If you've an early ferry from Piraeus, consider staying near the port the night before rather than rushing from the city centre at dawn.

Deck class vs. seat. On Blue Star ferries, deck class means you've access to all public areas but no assigned seat. In summer this can mean crowded common areas, if you're travelling with luggage and children, a reserved seat or cabin is worth the small upgrade.

Bring snacks. Ferry cafeterias are functional but expensive. Pack a few things for the journey.

Arriving at Naxos Port (Chora)

The ferry docks right in the centre of Naxos town, known locally as Chora. The moment the bow ramp drops, you're steps from the old town. The iconic Portara, a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway standing on a small islet connected to the port by a causeway, is the first thing you'll see.

From the port, everything is walkable:

  • The old Venetian kastro and market lanes are a 5-minute walk uphill.
  • Agios Georgios beach (sandy, calm, safe for children) is a 10-minute walk south.
  • Car and scooter hire offices line the port road, we strongly recommend renting a vehicle to explore the interior and the west coast beaches.

Onward Island Hopping from Naxos

Naxos is one of the best island-hopping bases in the Cyclades. Its central position means connections are frequent and short:

  • Naxos to Paros: The quickest inter-island hop in the Cyclades, just 25 minutes by high-speed ferry. Paros and Naxos together make a perfect 7-day combination.
  • Naxos to Ios: About 1.5 hours. A popular add-on for younger travellers.
  • Naxos to Santorini: Approximately 2 hours by high-speed ferry or 3–4 hours on a conventional service.
  • Naxos to Mykonos: Around 1.5 hours on fast ferries.

If you're planning a multi-island trip, we suggest reading our full Naxos island guide before you arrive, it covers beaches, villages, food, and transport in detail.

High-speed ferries operated by SeaJets and Fast Ferries take approximately 3.5 to 4 hours from Piraeus. Conventional Blue Star ferries take 5 to 6 hours depending on stops. The route includes a brief call at Paros, which is only about 25 minutes before Naxos.

Can you fly from Athens to Naxos?

Yes, with limitations. Sky Express operates seasonal domestic flights between Athens International Airport and Naxos Airport (JNX), taking about 45 minutes in the air. Flights are limited in frequency and not available year-round, so the ferry is the primary and most reliable way to reach the island.

Deck-class tickets on Blue Star Ferries start at around €40–€45. High-speed ferry seats on SeaJets or Fast Ferries cost approximately €55–€70. Prices are higher in July and August, and booking early online gives you the best rates.

Which ferry company is best for Athens to Naxos?

For speed, SeaJets and Fast Ferries are the top choices. For comfort, luggage space, and a more relaxed crossing, Blue Star Ferries is unbeatable. Budget travellers will appreciate Blue Star's deck-class fares.

When should I book my Athens to Naxos ferry?

Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead for July and August travel, peak-season crossings sell out. For May, June, September, and October, booking 1 to 2 weeks in advance is usually sufficient. Always buy online rather than at the port.
