12 Best Things to Do in Amorgos 2026

Last updated: May 2026 · The wild eastern edge of the Cyclades

Amorgos is the easternmost of the Cyclades and one of the most spectacular. A long, narrow island of sheer cliffs, two main towns, and trails that have been walked for thousands of years. If you love hiking, monasteries, and a sea so deep it turns almost black, this is your island.

⛪ Culture & Landmarks

1. Hozoviotissa Monastery

The single most unforgettable sight in Amorgos: a dazzling white monastery wedged into a 300-metre cliff above the sea, founded in 1088. The climb up the steps is steep but short, and monks still welcome visitors with a shot of psimeni raki and loukoumi. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees).

2. Chora (Amorgos Town)

A perfect Cycladic capital crowned by a Venetian Kastro on a rock. Whitewashed lanes, dozens of tiny churches, windmills on the ridge, and almost no cars. Come at dusk when the bougainvillea glows and the tavernas fill.

3. The Venetian Kastro

Climb the rock at the centre of Chora for 360° views over the island and the Aegean. The little chapel at the top is one of the best sunset spots in the Cyclades.

🌊 The Big Blue

4. The Olympia Shipwreck

Below Kalotaritissa on the wild southwest coast lies the rusting hull of the Olympia, the shipwreck made world-famous by Luc Besson's 1988 cult film The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu). You can swim out to it or view it from the trail above.

5. Free-diving & Snorkelling

Amorgos's deep, clear water made it a natural choice for The Big Blue. Several operators run snorkelling and intro free-diving sessions from Aegiali.

🥾 Hiking

6. The Melania Trail (Chora to Aegiali)

The classic Amorgos hike follows an ancient stone path linking the two towns via the Hozoviotissa Monastery, the Stavros chapel, and the mountain villages of Tholaria and Langada. Roughly 5–6 hours one way; do it in sections if you prefer.

7. Mountain Villages of Langada & Tholaria

Two beautiful hill villages above Aegiali, linked by a short loop trail past Byzantine churches. Tholaria has some of the island's best home-style tavernas.

🏖️ Beaches

8. Agia Anna

The small, rocky cove directly below Hozoviotissa, with crystalline water and a Big Blue cameo. No sand and few facilities, but the colour of the sea is extraordinary.

9. Mouros

A dramatic pebble beach beneath grey cliffs on the south coast, with deep water and a single seasonal taverna. One of the most striking swims on the island.

10. Aegiali Bay

The island's only proper sandy beach, a long sweep at the northern port backed by tavernas. Family-friendly and easy to reach.

🍽️ Food & Experiences

11. Taste & Local Cheese

Amorgos is known for psimeni raki (raki sweetened with honey and spices) and xinotyro cheese. Try them at a kafeneio in Chora or Langada.

12. Boat Trip to Nikouria Islet

A short caique ride from Aegiali reaches the uninhabited islet of Nikouria, with two sheltered, sandy beaches and turquoise water.
