Kea, also known as Tzia, is the closest Cycladic island to Athens yet remains refreshingly authentic and undiscovered. The island's landscape differs from the typical Cycladic scenery, with its terracotta-colored houses blending into rolling hills covered in ancient oak forests and almond groves. The main town, Ioulida, is a maze of stepped alleys and traditional architecture, watched over by the island's mascot - an ancient stone lion carved from the native rock. Kea's rich maritime history is evident in its numerous shipwrecks, including the famous HMHS Britannic, making it a paradise for diving enthusiasts. The island's extensive network of ancient paths, recently restored and well-marked, connects four ancient city-states through landscapes of dramatic variety. The coastline alternates between sandy beaches like Koundouros and rocky coves perfect for snorkeling. Kea's culinary tradition is renowned for its local products, including thyme honey, acorn cookies, and the famous "loza" (cured pork). The island's proximity to Athens has made it a favorite weekend retreat for Athenians, who appreciate its laid-back atmosphere and excellent tavernas, yet it remains uncrowded even in peak season.
