Kythnos is typically the first or last stop for sailboats chartering out of Athens (Alimos/Lavrio). Consequently, the port of Merichas and the bay of Kolona are incredibly busy on Friday nights and Sunday mornings. Visiting mid-week in June or September ensures a much quieter experience.

The village of Loutra is home to natural thermal springs that flow into the sea. This makes Kythnos a viable destination even in the cooler months of April and October, where a hot soak in the sea is particularly enjoyable.
